7 string pickups, new to BKP
« on: January 26, 2010, 12:44:11 AM »
Hi all,

I'm hoping you guys can give me some advice. I'm in the market for some new pickups for an Ibanez RG1527 and having heard such great things about BKPs I thought I'd look into them.

Some background/context.

I play a variety of things (not all that well to be honest), mainly stuff along the lines of Pink Floyd, Dream Theater or Metallica, though I'm currently sitting down trying to work my way through Larry Carlton's solo at the start of Steely Dan's Don't Take Me Alive, so some versatility would be appreciated. I've generally focused on learning rhythm riffage over the years, though I'd like to learn more lead stuff.

At the moment I'm using a Boss GT8 direct into my computer, as I'm renting so I don't have much room for an amp. When I can, I plan to get a decent valve amp. The other guitar I have with me here is an ESP Ltd with an EMG 60/EMG 81 combo, which covers the Metallica stuff okay but ain't great at more soulful stuff, and the stock pickups in the Ibanez are very poor considering the price of thing. I have a old Squier Stratocaster as well, with some after market pickups I've yet to fit, but that's not with me at the moment.

So yeah, what do you guys reckon would be a good pickup combo for me? Any advice is much appreciated  :).

I am tempted to say Nailbomb/Cold Sweat since you want to cover a lot of ground with everything between Pink Floyd and Metallica. This pickup combination is extremely versatile (especially with coilsplit option) and it sounds really good in basswood RGs...

Hi

The Nailbomb would be perfect for the tone you are describing it would covers the areas you have written about and Nailbombs are well suited with Ibanez guitars

People playing metal through to jazz use the Nailbomb, tonally its organic, powerful, rich and versatile.

Thanks for the reply guys. From what you guys have said, and from what I've read on other parts of the forum, a Nailbomb in the bridge and a Cold Sweat in the neck seems to be the way forward.
