HSS Wiring help for a numpty
« on: January 26, 2010, 04:25:11 PM »
Ok, I'm trying to figure out which wires I need to solder in from my Warpig to replace the stock humbucker in my Showmaster. I have replaced pickups like-for-like before by keeping track of what goes where, but this has stumped me due to the colours not matching the fender examples off the interwebs. I was expecting to see Green hot, White and black together and Red earthed, maybe my wiring guide i've got for Fender is wrong!?

I have circled the soldering relating to the wires from the stock humberbucker which is currently in there, if anyone can tell me which wires from the warpig need to replace them I would be very grateful.

I've done it now, I soldered the hot wire from the BKP into the white wires position and it works fine, I have no idea what the red wire there was for.

Is your tone control working on the humbucker?

In position 2 on your five way, are both coils of the warpig working?

Check by tapping the tip of a metal key or screwdriver onto one pole of each coil while plugged in. You should hear a little tap from the deactivated coil and a big thud bang on the active coil poles.

Hey,

The tone works fine and both coils are activated when in position two.

If my rudimentary knowledge of electronics is correct, would reconnecting the equivalent wire in place of the red one had split the coils of the warpig?

Looking at your import (in line) type switch I think that's what would happen.

It's no real loss to try it at a later date.

Enjoy the Warpig.

Easiest way to figure this out for any humbucker is to actually identify the north and south start and end wires and wire in the new pickup exactly as the old one then check that it's in phase when combined with the other pickups. I always check the Seymour Duncan chart and it hasn't sent me wrong yet*

BKP wiring chart is here - http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/faq.html#13

*although looking at the Fender wiring there and the original wiring to your switch, I think this may be an exception. You could just put a meter across the pickup wires and figure out which wires are start and ends.
