Any wine drinkers out there?
« on: February 02, 2010, 04:19:16 PM »
Saw myself on video today - what a bloater.  Decided to cut right down on the beer, maybe substitute it for sensible amounts of dry white wine, which has far fewer calories.  There is a theory that cutting out alcohol altogether would drastically reduce calorie intake, but I don't want to give this the oxygen of publicity.

Anyway, can anyone recommend a dry white wine that's got lots of flavour but is not too acidic?  Something that lends itself to being sipped slowly?

Thanks,

Mike.

French Sancerre is full of flavour, but a bit on the hefty side price wise, last bottle i got was £11.00, but have been charged £8 a glass in a restaurant.

Go with a nice red, Barolo or Valpolicello, strong dark fruit (berries & cherries) flavours, unless you're a vegetarian (as some wines use blood)

I believe gin is the least calorific of the booze family.

Drink only Chateau Petrus - that way you can only afford to drink one per year!  Cuts down on the calories bg time.

At the start of every day I decide between "grain" or "grape", then I only drink wine/sherry/port or beer/whisky that day.

However, while I collect whisky & could talk for days about single malt, I'm a terrible cheapskate when it comes to wine :)

Probably my favourite white wine is Koonunga Hill chardonnay (actually, their Merlot is really nice too if you fancy a red & can find it).  Other than that, I just randomly pick stuff from supermarket shelves - I'm really enjoying wines from Chile at the moment.

Is that before or after getting up, showering, brushing your teeth etc?

Get thee to a wine tasting event.

Ravenswood is a nice tasting mid priced red.
If you like grapefruit juice, put some gin in it and you're on to a winner.

Ultimately there is always Michelob low carb beer?

I'll take red wine over white any day, they add sugar to the white stuff

If you're after white wine I'm very fond of Kiwi Suavignon Blancs.  They tend to be quite minerally and have a real gooseberry aroma.  I also really like Gerwurtzraminer too and there are some good, not expensive, Kiwi wines made with this grape from Majestic Wines.

oops  poor choice of phrasing.

I think I started that post meaning to type "at the start of every drinking session", then changed my mind to "before I take my first drink of the day" but somehow munged them into what got posted.

No, I don't spin a bottle at the breakfast table to decide on my pre-cereal apperitif :)  I just happen to believe in never mixing grain & grape...

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.  I never knew we had so many winos on the forum!  I'm also disappointed that no-one has been rock and roll enough to suggest a bottle of Thunderbird and an eighth.  We must be way too posh.

Andrew W - by co-incidence I did get a Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc last night prior to reading your post.  I'll have a pint of that tonight and let you know my thoughts.
