Avon Les Paul by Rose Morris? Any info
« on: February 05, 2010, 07:15:46 PM »
Hi all,

I found one of these in the attic, it has Avon on the headstock and made in Japan. Also has Rossetti and Rose Morris on the back. I've had a cursory look on the internet and I gather they were imported and sold by Rose Morris guitar shop in London. If anyone could shed light on its value or if it would be worth doing up please tell me so? At the moment its just gathering dust so its a bit of shame of a shame to leave it alone altogether.

Cheers

I believe they're the same as the Ibanez branded LP copies of the 70s.

Bolt on neck?

Definitely the same as an Ibanez LP copy then.  Mid to late seventies, and probably worth around £200?

Ok here are some pics. There is a bit of tissue on the machine head on the bottom right hand corner of the first picture in case your wondering what it was. There is a bit of wear (or relicing depending on how you view these things), I believe everything is original. I don't know who turned the humbucker around or put the neck plate on upside down. Oh yeah, in case you're wondering the screws are all missing for the various covers that's why they're off.

Is it a ply or a solid body?

Looks like ply, but still a heavy guitar considering its slimmer than an LP Standard

I don't think it's going to be worth much more than £150. However the important question is, what does it sound like?

If it's un-playable in the state it's in I'd be tempted to do it up just to see what it does sound like. Some quirky low-fi guitars can have a tone all of their own.

I didn't think it would be worth much, just that wanted to see anyone had info or if someone collected them. I would rather let if go cheap to someone who has an interest in them, than put it on evil bay. I might do it up, the neck is straight and only has superficial marks and the strings ring and all, just probably need to redo all the electrics.

I bought one of them for £10.It was my first guitar.I used it for six months with my first amp,Mesa Boogie Studio Pre and 50/50 power amp into Tannoy Hi Fi speakers.I thought it sounded fantastic. Then I bought a used Mex Fender Strat (£160),a 1x12 Black shadow loaded cab off E Bay (£30)and was blown away. I gave the Lester to a neighbour.

I have one of these guitars from about 1974 when I was 15! Not played it in years but it's up in the loft in it's bag somewhere. I will dig it out later and take some pictures.

As 'dobbins' says above, it's quite a heavy guitar for it's size.

I gave WezV an old 70's Ibanez Reverse Firebird (Rebranded CSL) and it was a lovely bit of wood (excellent mahogany neck and body).  Even though it may have a ply body, have a good look at the neck as it could be a peach.

Wez - How's the Firebird comming on, had chance to fiddle with it yet?
Advice worth what you just paid for it.
