BKP90/91/92 - where's the love?
« on: February 11, 2010, 01:05:26 PM »
Getting into Leslie West in a big way (no pun intended), and am considering a project...

BKP90s don't get much of a mention around these here parts...  anyone have words of wisdom to share about them?

Mark.

I expect they're quite good.

But words of actual wisdom as in, er, "known facts based on experience"... no, I haven't any.

I'd be keen to hear some though.

If you want to get a good Leslie West "starter" album, there's an excellent 2-CD best-of called Over The Top with tracks from all the original Mountain albums, in chronological order, plus a few rarities.  Highly recommended (by me, anyway)!

Excellent - I'll seek that one out.

I just saw West, Bruce Jr and Laing a couple of weeks ago - Corky was well out of it - he dropped about 20 drum sticks, Malcom is not Jack by a long way, and Leslie got fat again (last time I saw him live was the Mountain show in the World Trade Center plaza the week before 9/11).   I do have to say that he was getting a great tone from the Deans and Buddas, but sad to say, Edgar Winter's band (who opened), had the better musicians that night.

Moving back on topic, I would get a BKP-91 for Leslie West's tone, a solid mahogany guitar and a cleaner amp tone that you probably think.
So many pickups, so little time

Yeah, that was nice - very like my Yam SG200, actually, which is a good thing.  Felt similar and sounded similar, as I remember.

I'm contemplating a build project...  I remember Wez posted an LP Junior that he built a while back, and I though - well, if Wez can do it, surely ANYONE can!!!

But a set-neck?  Could be a bit tricky...

Have you compared the to the 91/90s?  I'm wondering at the beefyness of them, if you know what I mean...  My impression is that people tend to go for the 91s because they're the middle ground.

And yes PQ - set neck is going to be tricky.  Haven't committed myself to it yet.  But I'm definitely tempted...

I know Jonathan has sung the praises of the 92 before.

I can imagine they'd be a good choice for a bright bolt-on like a Jaguar, for a mahogany set-neck I don't think you need that much power.  The 91 is really quite powerful - in fact all P-90s are pretty beefy compared with Fender single-coils.

I had a customer who had an Ibanez Talman with an EMG81 in the bridge
We swapped it out for a BKP92 at some stage and in my opinion it rocked just as hard - sounded great
