how hot are piledrivers?
« on: February 16, 2010, 04:38:32 AM »
hey guys, long time reader, first time poster.

Anyways, to get straight to the point, I've found myself becoming a big fan of tele's. However, the majority of music that I play is pretty heavy. I already own an Ibanez RG with a miracle man in, and its absolutely perfect. I'm not expecting the tele to get close to this, but it does need to be able to handle metal pretty well.

With all this in mind, exactly how heavy will piledrivers go?

Thanks

I had one in my Tele in the bridge position.  It is very hot.  It had all the same tonal characteristics as the stock SCN pickup I had but with just more ball and maybe a little more articulation.  But, if you're going to play metal, I would suggest sticking to humbuckers.  I modded that same Tele to fit full size humbuckers (BK Painkiller in bridge and soon to be Nailbomb in neck) and it brings the metal quite a bit more than single coils.

Getting a really heavy, humbucker-ish sound is easy with Piledrivers. I'd say it's the perfect SC bridge pup for what you describe. Having said that, it also depends on what amp you use... If you're running through a 5150 or Diezel or similar, then no problem. If you're using something significantly less powerful/gainy, then you'll probably want to incorporate a boost or overdrive pedal of some sort.

Hey guys,

Thanks for your replies. I would prefer not to have to mod the tele to fit humbuckers, although I can imagine yours sounding amazing. It could be an option if I can't find any other way though. Like I said, I don't expect the same tone that I get from my Miracle Man, just something that can handle heavy stuff. I'm playing through an ENGL Fireball so amp gain shouldn't be a problem.

Just out of interest, any ideas of a good neck pickup to pair it with?

Thanks again

pile drivers are great i put them in a road worn mex tele and they are great for heavy rock etc, however roll off the volume a bit and you still get old skool tele tones

Haha yeah, to be honest that video was one of the things that made me wonder about this whole thing in the first place. I've seen a lot of Misha and Nolly from the sevenstring.org forum.
