Strat Project
« on: February 21, 2010, 07:13:53 AM »
Greetings fellow guitards - A couple of questions for you experts out there  :)

I'm in the process of shopping for new pups for my project strat and have heard NOTHING but the BEST about BKPs!

I have pretty much decided she will be my P90 guitar, but I find myself in need of some pup placement advice (BTW - Im looking to put a fernandes sustainer - 401 model - in the mix).

SOOOOO my first question is, how should I arrange my pickups?

1.

Neck:  Fernandes single coil sustainer/pickup (which I believe is the recommended position for it)
Middle:  P90
Bridge:  P90

OR

2.

Neck: P90
Middle:  Sustainer
Bridge: P90

Second question, should I have one of the pups Reverse wound, and does it matter which one (neck, middle or bridge)?

Third question.  Mississippi Queens or BKP-92's?  :? hehe - THANKS IN ADVANCE!  :D

OH! Here she is..

I read this one yesterday - but it's way out of my comfort zone (I only have experience of standard strat singles in strats...)

I suspect it might be the same for all the other regulars who've seen this so far?..

I'd recommend dropping Tim an email at BKP :D

Welcome to the forum though, love the colour on that guitar :D

Sorry but I don't think I can't help much here - I know nothing about Fernandes sustainors and never had a P90 guitar. The only point I can answer is about the "reverse wound" (which FWIW is "reverse wound reverse polarity", or RWRP for short): it's usually the middle pup that get built that way, to allow for hum-cancellation on positions 2 and 4. Only makes sense if you care for hum-cancellation, of course (as far as I'm concerned, I prefer to have an even behaviour and handle the hum another way - at worst, just living with it).

Anyway : by all mean AskTim before you place your order - he'll know better.

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys.  I appreciate the guidance..

And thanks to my OCD, I've now done enough research to conclude that the sustainer works best in the neck position and will altogether disregard it for the time being and focus on getting some monster tone from this beeotchh..
courtesy of BPK, of course
And since discovering the MQs Ive gotten to read up on (and hear clips from) various other BPK models.  It seems the Holy Diver and Cold Sweat (which sound amazing) are well favored.

I like the creamy ass single coil singing solo sound (say that 10 times fast) and love that the MQ's OR BPK-90/91/92s will allegedly deliver that WITH a bit of chunk to it, for those heavier distorted power progressions, which also stirs my loins.

Any other suggestions?  My Gods are (in no particular order):

Frusciante, Gilmour, Bellamy (yes, Matt), and Johnny Greenwood

and to ask Tim is this the right address?  info@bareknucklepickups.co.uk
