harley benton cabs?
« on: February 26, 2010, 05:55:55 PM »
i'm looking for a 4x12 cab. cheap. with V30s.

so i found those Harley Bentons (they make some of the cheapest gear on earth).
uhm... they're made in china. and have v30s in them. and are ridiculously cheap... where the problem could be? after all what can possibly break in a cab (except for the speakers, but they're V30s, so...)?

any opinion?

Been thinking of these myself... I'm no snob and would maybe upgrade later.

Are they OK to get going with? I only have a combo at the moment but want a head & very low cost cab too.

I don't have any amp equipment but I do have a Harley Benton 6 string Bass, bought it new from Thomann for something ridiculous like £130 and it has active pickups. It's pretty nice sounding and the build quality is brilliant for the price. I don't see any problems in trying out the cab mate, as you say, what can be wrong with it? From my experience HB products are brilliant quality for the price.

ive used harley benton 4x12s once. one sounded terrible, and one was ok.
nothing to shout about. I've never really hated any particular cab but I really didn't like the bad one i tried.
I used them 2 nights on the run. just didnt project or sound clear to me.

They're made from MDF, so they sound dead and lifeless.

Cabs are so underrated, but IMO they account for a big part of your tone (I mean the wood and construction, not even talking speakers). I was one day testing like 8 different 2x12s, all with either V30 or combo of V30 and G12H, and no two cabs sounded the same.

Prices are down everywhere, I'd rather get something good used.

If you're up for a 4x12 you should try the EVH 5153 straight cab, that thing sounds awesome. Marshalls are great, especially old ones (pre 1980s). I would definitely try them before buying, you will see what a huge difference it makes.

i know, you're absolutely right... the thing is that i'm currently playing on a cheap peavey 2x12 cab with cheap peavey speakers and i actually like it even if it's supposed to sound, well... cheap. so either i'm not so selective on cabs or with my usual tone settings and playing volume a cab that's actually good acoustically is not that important. or i was just lucky and got a cheap cab that sounds good, after all...

i was just curious, i've got big expenses ahead (nothing gear related and nothing i'd trow away a cent for if i didn't really HAVE to...) and cheap things are so tempting... :)
