which BKs around this output?
« on: March 05, 2010, 03:45:52 AM »
So I will tell you my experience with various dimarzio pickups, and maybe you can recommend me some BKs that would give me what I am looking for. So I use Basswood Ibanez guitars generally, and I have been using the stock PAF Pro in my jem... I am looking for a new pickup and in the past week I have tried a couple out (borrowed from friends). I tried a tonezone... hated the tone, but the output level was close to what I wanted... doing a bit of research I found out that the Paf Pro was 300 output, the TZ around 375, Evo around 404... so after getting a feel for the output I think that I want something in the 350 - 390. Now tone wise... I want some balanced EQ wise, nothing ridiculous like the TZ bass. Most important aspect of tone too me... are TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT... and articulate. I play very progressive metal, but I dont like pups with too much output as I find they get compressed and unclear. I LOVE my Paf pros... but I just wish I had something with a bit more output, and tighter. The next dimarzios that I am going to try are the Breed and the Evo 2 (Evo 2 is like the Evo just less output). Thanks!

Painkiller (bridge) is closest to Evolution (bridge). I had two RG550s: one with Painkiller set and other with Evolutions and there wasn't big difference in tone. Painkiller is great pickup but maybe too hot for you.

To my ears Rebel Yell has lots of similarities to Painkiller (middy, tight, articulate), but no so hot and not so tight (alnico5...).

Holy Diver is something like TZ, but clearer and much better, not so bassy. Not as tight as Painkiller or RY , but definitely tight enought for most of stuff. My favourite "Metal all-rounder"...

holy diver is not like the tz
it has more high end, less bass and it's no near as compressed
in my experience, the closest thing to the tone zone is the miracle man neck and then the warpig neck

if you want to stay in the low/medium output ballpark, I think the black dog would be a great option
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat
