Choosing pickups for GnR
« on: March 07, 2010, 02:44:09 PM »
I'd like to replace my Rockfield Mafia's with something more vintage sounding and thick , not so metally if you understand. I was thinking of getting Seymour Duncan Alnico 2 Pro's as then i'll have the same pickups as Slash but i got suggested to look into Bare Knuckle pickups aswell. So whats a similar pickup to alnico 2 pro , with that thick british roar, i definately want to archieve that somewhat agressive crunchy sound without going to metal territory.
Stuff i play is GnR, Zepp, Thin Lizzy, Skid Row , and some metal tracks from time to time but not so much into that.
I'll be playing this through a british voiced tube amp if it makes any difference.
Should i go alnico 2 pros or ?

Thanks for your input.

Oh yea and i forgot to tell you my guitar - Bc Rich Mockingbird ST ( mahogany , quilted maple veneer top wood, Ebony fretboard )

And to ask you something since you ought to know ,
Since the Mockingbird has so many controlls (single coil taps , phase switch , varitone switch ) is there a way to install the new pickups in a way that i can still use the controls or is do they work only with the original Rockfield Mafas?
Thanks

I have an original mockingbird and I fitted a Cold Sweat set to it with no problems.  Just make sure you get 4 conductor wire and watch the colours.  For pickups Mules with AII magnets will do the trick.

I'd pick the black dog
or maybe even something hotter like the abraxas
you just can't have slash AND zep AND skid row AND lizzy

Yeah i know i cant do all ,
I just want GnR tone then - thats what i play most of the team.
Whats the advantages of the Black Dog or Abraxas over Alnico 2 Pro other than hand made ?

@PhilKing
Do you have the ST mock with all the switches?

I'd say the Stormy Monday as it has an alnico 2 magnet
They are pretty fay sounding pickups

Assuming that's a keying error! Could be 'gay' or 'fat'. My money is on 'fat'.

For what it's worth I would suggest the SMs - I asked a similar question a year or so ago and was recommended the SM's for GnR.
I think I hate being indecisive.

It's an 82 Mockingbird with the preamp and everything.

Where can i see some sound clips of the Black Dog and Stormy Monday?
Also on Stormy Monday it says Wiring: Braided Two Conductor , and i would need 4 to make all the switches on the Mockingbird work , can i order Stormy Monday with 4 conductors?
Whats the advantages of the Stormy Monday over SD Alnico 2 Pro ?

stormy monday is the warmest and lowest output BKP model
the black dog is low-medium output (what tim calls "vintage hot"), also fat and smooth, but a bit punchier
I'd say a bit more versatile for the other stuff you play and still very vintage sounding
if you wanted ONLY slash's tones, then I'd say stormy or alnico 2 mule
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

How do you hit the strings? Which picks do you use? These are maybe some of the most important factors of all. If you are a player which plays really hard. Then a lower output pickup would do. if you play like i do, which is breakneck fast and noisy as hell. Then you want a higher output humbucker, because not all strokes will be equally hard.
Your music will never be as hard as this!

I'd never have agreed with Stormy Mondays for Slash as they're low output and AII, but then again so are the Duncan AII's he uses.

Whats changed my mind is changing the AIV magnet in my Abraxas set this afternoon to AII and I really like the change in tone and softer/smoother overall feel.  The AII gives a much softer attack, but not wooly at all, still plenty of clarity - less output though.
