death metal nostalgia
« on: March 07, 2010, 03:37:25 PM »
I've been to see some older thrash and death metal bands recently that I was into at school/college back in the late 80s/early 90s and it's weird to think that this is now all nostalgia tours (mostly) - who'da thunk it.

Some of these bands just never toured in Newcastle when I was in my teens/twenties, so I never got to see them - only got to see Testament last year and tomorrow night Obituary are playing.  The last time I saw Slayer in Newcastle was 1991 for christ sake - I had to go see them at the Astoria in 2001 otherwise I'd never have seen them again.  I always wanted to see Napalm too and never got to see them until sometime around 2002/03 (have since seen them a few times up here - always awesome).

Anyone else been to some old school death gigs recently?

I'll be at Obituary on Tuesday provided I can sort guesties. I'm at the majority of Glasgow extreme metal shows, outwith the new hip, deathcore stuff.

Obituary are a great live band, not in a synchronized headbanging, running/jumping around way but great because their playing is so tight.  The only thing that I've found disappointing about them has been the way that they've played hardly anything from "The End Complete" in the live set since they toured that album in 1993 (usually just one song from it on later tours... :()
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

On the topic of old school DM, Autopsy are playing a reunion show at Maryland Deathfest. How I'd like to see them in the UK.

Slayer are always fun to watch, even if they are a band with very bad ratio of good songs per album (except for the first albums).

I also love to see In Flames live.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

from the current setlist I found posted on their message board, it seems they're only playing the title song from The End Complete.

I see that Aborted, The Red Chord, Rotten Sound and Those Who Lie Beneath are touring the UK too - I'll be at the Newcastle show on 20th April for Rotten Sound.

I really wanted Rotten Sound for Deathfest, sadly they had a show booked already same day. Fantastic band.

I saw them both in Quebec city in 2001. really great. back then in flames were about to release reroute to remain. soulfly were also on the bill

the best bit was mandatory suicide, it was an outdoor gig. mandatory suicide goes by the traditional intro of "du du du dum wee waa wo wee waa" except... at the show it goes like this

"du du du dum (sky opens up and it starts raining on us all right as the drum hits the dum) wee waa wo wee waa''

tom araya completely skipped the first verse and went out in the rain in the front of the stage to headbang with everyone else. they wrapped it up with spill the blood and i forgot what, i was a wee lad back then!. very memorable moment. they don't usually do many South of Heaven songs on live gigs, but that was the cake.
My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

Slayer rarely play anything from Diabolus In Musica either - another Haneman-heavy album.

first time seeing Obituary and they didn't disappoint - totally mind-blowing, they've still got IT.

Trevor Peres' guitar tone is still crushing as ever - JCM800 with a RAT boosting it, just awesome.  His JCM800 had an extra knob beside the presence pot - I'm thinking this is most likely a 'resonance' mod for extra bass end (unless anyone KNOWS for sure what it is).

if they're playing in your area - GO SEE THEM!!!

Will probably attend Obituary tonight, think Ive got guesties sorted. If I can manage I'll ask about them amp.

I'll be surprised if it's actually his though, so might be a mod someone else has done and that happens to be the amp hired for the tour.

Oh, on the Slayer front, they're one of these bands that I think are absolutely fantastic the first time you see them, and totally boring every time after that. The best thing they've done in nigh on two decades is make Mastodon big.

If you meet Peres, tell him I was the one standing directly on his right with the red 'plaid' shirt on (yes, I'm fond of these shirts, oh the shame, ha ha).  It'll be interesting to find out exactly what the extra knob does.

I'm not sure the amp will be his either - the flight cases did have the name of a hire company on them.  Still, it might be a mod he uses on other amps, not sure.  His tone was f*cking monumental whatever - its the RAT.

As for Slayer, they're very consistent and the venue plays a part too - I saw them at Brixton Academy a few years back and they were 'ok', same with Lamb Of God (who are usually a good bet to dish out the br00talz).  When I saw Slayer at the Astoria in 2001/2002 they were just brilliant, right on form - possibly better than when I saw them in Newcastle back in '91.

Answer: Dunno, I just leave it in the middle.

He was chatting to loads of folk though, so whether that's the truth or a "I can't be assed talking about it" I don't know.
