Holy Diver & Miracle Man heavy metal riffage
« on: March 07, 2010, 04:30:53 PM »
I haven't recorded anything for a while, partly because I've been very busy, partly because my last few clips didn't really contribute anything new.  Anyway, I've been trying to experiment with mic placement, plus I recently revalved my Engl Savage so I thought I'd share the results :)  This is as close as I can get to a shootout - both guitars are Les Pauls of similar age & weight, both have recently been restrung & set up.  Surprisingly there is hardly any difference between them (perhaps I should just give up on shootouts ), I guess what this tells us is that both HD & MM are equally at home playing this sort of metal or that I really suck at recording

Guitar: Gibson Les Paul Std with Holy Diver
Guitar: Gibson Les Paul Std with Miracle Man
Amp: Engl E610 Savage 120 (BBE 362 in FX loop)
Cab: Engl 4x12" with Celestion Classic Lead 80s
Mics: Sennhieser E906 & Shure SM57
Recording: Presonus Bluetube DP, Fostex MR16HD

A picture is worth a thousand words, so I took a couple to show mic placement:

(You can see my amp settings in one of the pics too for those that are interested).

The E906 is panned hard left, the SM57 hard right in all clips.  FWIW, the riff is a slightly derivative thing from a work-in-progress song.

Enjoy :)

While I was at it, I also recorded the same thing with my Feline custom superstrat with old-spec ceramic Holy Diver.

Then for a laugh, I mixed all 3 together - HD hard left, old HD hard right, MM down in the mix & centre

Good clips dude, they sound pretty representative of the Savage I have. The CL80's seem to complement the voicing of the head well and seem to get rid of some of the harsh treble/presence I've experienced using mine with V30's.

Thanks, that's EXACTLY what I found when I first got my Savage & ran it into my Mesa Recto 2x12" - a really "hard" top end that I couldn't tame even with the presence & treble controls right down.  I've always liked CL80s, so I got an Engl 4x12 & swapped the speakers out for 2 of them + 2 G12K-100s.  It compliments the Savage perfectly & now I've swapped the preamp valves out it sounds even better :)
