PRS musings
« on: March 09, 2010, 05:20:35 PM »
So, I had a day off and visited some of the countries finest guitar emporiums and played a ton of gear. I was originally looking for a VOS SG but after having played one confirmed that I just don't really get on with gibsons 'feel' wise and that was the end of that.

Which led me to PRS again. I'm not wedded to PRS or anything but my unloved by many singlecut trem is still my main player and my SC245 is just a beautiful sounding guitar.

I found a sunburst 22 which for those in the know is a custom 22 with all nitro finish and 57/08 pickups. The sound is very PAf like and the closest thing I can get to the VOS Sg tone wise but with PRS comfort. These things used to cost nearly £3k but you can get one of the few remaining ones at just over £2k. Its still a vast amount of money and I'm wavering over whether to get it because..........

1. I already have 2 PRS'ssss and I fancied something different
2. The nitro is nice but the neck is a little sticky
3. Its a lot of money

I like the guitar very much and it will probably be the last time to bag one of these new but something is holding me back. Anyone else ever agonized over a purchase or should I just grow a pair?

Matt

I agonised over my Modern Eagle and "Francine".  It's a lot of cash to spend!

My PRS McCarty Korina could be parted with if you're interested, and with that plus a PAF replica pickup set of your choice you'd get a LOT of change left over......

Ever the salesman, our Dave!

That McCarty Korina is a nice-looking one though... I wish mine had a one-piece body even though it probably doesn't make a great deal of difference to the tone.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

yup. Hard to get a 1 piece body.
Dave looks after his gear.
Have I played that one?
I think I have at some point

If you find the Nitro sticky ... do you really wanna pay 2K for a flawed guitar?

Nitro seems to lose its sticky feeling after a while, though, doesn't it?

Well my Edwards LP came without any stickyness. I would even go as far as say it's the unstickiest lacquered neck I own.

IMO if it's sticky, it's badly done.

Apparently nitro does lose its stickiness in time. The comment about a flawed guitar is a valid one though - its a lot of money if I'm not completely happy with it.

I want a lighter brighter PAF tone within a guitar that fits me well and is light, and plays as smoothly as a PRS does (and also has a trem that works) I can't think of any other guitar that does that as well as the sunburst 22.......

I should just buy it shouldn't I :?

I also had a go on a Martyn Booth (the same guitar that was in guitarist) and its lovely. Beautifully made but the maple topped version is £3k and thats a bit much

Yep - I think you've talked yourself into it. And I'm not going to disagree with you.
I think I hate being indecisive.

That was what I thought too.  A "sticky" neck would be a show-stopper for me at almost any price...

Well I've bought it! Get it on Saturday hopefully.

It gives me exactly what I want in tone and playability with a superb trem system, its essentially a custom 22 (which I prefer) with nitro (which I prefer) and 57/08s (which are a great PAF alike)

I'm not a particular fan of PRS new direction and it might be the last chance to get a new Joe Knaggs era guitar that I actually want. I will now own 3 PRS guitars none of which the factory are making anymore which just seems bizarre to me.

Pics when it arrives (of course)

Matt  :D

Nice work  :)

I've got two PRS's that you can't get any more, and have no intention of buying any new ones in the future.  The new stuff just sucks, big time.

I'd pick up another Mondern Eagle if I could though...
