Two 'buckers, serial ???
« on: March 11, 2010, 01:16:06 PM »
Got this crazy idea since I wired a 4-way switch on my tele... Ok, must be a bit over the top , but still:

did anyone tried wiring two 'buckers in serie ?

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Yes. I did it several times.

The result is about a 20-30% higher output than with a single humbucker with a blured and quite confussing sound.
Imagine that you run a fuzz at high gain, where there is a lot of meat but notes begin to loose their definition.

To my taste, when series is really useful is in the following cases:

  • 2 single coils in series
  • 1 humbucker and 1 single coil in series
  • 2 humbuckers/single coils ore any mix in series AND out-of-phase

The "20-30% higher ouptut" (perceived, at least) is about what I'd expect  given my experience with 2 SC series.

wrt/ the resulting tone, I guess this depends quite a lot on how hot and defined the 'buckers are... I used to have DM X2N's on my Vox Custom 24 (stock pups...), which are *way* hotter (DC _and_ output level) than PAFs, and given the difference - same guitar, same amp - with the Crawlers (which are already a bit on the hot side), I don't think that you'd get the same kind of results with X2Ns serial or Mules serial - X2Ns serial would indeed be way over the top (your description kind of reminds me of what I used to get with these cr@ps ), Mules serial, well, might be interesting for heavy stuff

If I may ask, with what pups did you try (don't care that much about the exact make and model - more about the type, magnet, and hotness).

Thanks for your input.

Full humbuckers: vintage to medium-hot output:

- BKP The Mule and Riff Raff
- Dimarzio Evolution and Tone Zone
- SD 59' and JB

Single coil sized humbuckers:

SD Cool Rail + Hot Rail
Dimarzio Air Norton S + Tone Zone S

Mixed:

Dimarzio Air Norton S + Mo'Joe

High output humbuckers as the Detonator in series should be a wall of sound.

There is no rules. Try it.
Just sharing my experience, here.
