Listening to music I probably normally wouldn't normally listen to and stopping worrying about it.

Adding to what Shobet already mentioned; why not actually do something very different on the guitar for a while ? If you are a Blueser - go off on a Jazz detour for a while, or Metal / hard Rocker, some Classic / Neo Classical specialisation for a bit. If you already do both /all / delete where applicable - then how about brushing up on whatever theory might come in useful, - or just learning / re-learning / revising arpeggios and such, and running them on the guitar, whilst watching Television. A great way to induce subliminal learning  - and get that sort 'under your fingers'.

It ALL eventually bleeds back into whatever your original stuff was, and makes the 'tool box' bigger.

I also find going to whatever 'other' hobby you have for a while  works a treat, especially if it is ( for example ) more physical, or certainly less cerebral.  If in doubt ( as Shobet implied ) - just put it all down, and stick it back under the bed for a while. I have always found that the 'block' clears - and in fact, you somehow come back much better at whatever you already did - without trying.

Pardon the expression, but the pragmatic name for this sort of thing is " Brain shag ".  :)

don't say shag, shobet will get excited!!!

when my riffing is rubbish I tend to put the guitar down for 2 or 3 days, I don't think I've tried anything else now that I think about it

I think mood has an affect on if you think a riff is good or not

Really ?

You do surprise me Shobet ; as Dave told me that you are often willing to pay quite a bit for a fragrant, rough shag :  especially as it's been 'ready rubbed' for you beforehand .  :)

No, that's how much I get on average. It varies though, sometimes I get as much as £9.68, but she normally has to be blind for me to get that amount.

Have you got access to any other types of musical instrument?

Could be another stringed instrument, but I find keyboards/piano works best for me...

Basically, if you can, have a doodle on an instrument you don't really know how to play. I find myself trying to figure out how to play my tired old guitar licks on it. And then interesting things start happening, and I end up back on the guitar exploring those ideas instead...

On a similar note, I've been playing cr@p recently - I'm generally not a bad guitarist, but I've been playing loads more now that I'm in a band, and recently I've been missing strings, playing bum notes, loads of cr@p stuff...

Take heart mate ; a U.K. guitar magazine, once did a "note for note" transcription of Michael Shenker's  / UFO Live version of 'Rock Bottom' - and to keep it absolutely faithful to the record, had to transcribe quite a few mistakes too !

From this I gather that the 15th person gave you 16 pence ?  :)
