Yeah, paduak is quite focussed.  A guess a "sparkling mahogany" sound is the best I can give!

Looking forward to giving it a better examiniation tonight though my full gigging rig.

that sounds very nice. :D

So overall, this thing rocks a fat one.  A large fat one.

I should call it Afghan Dave

Yo Dave, I'm really happy for you, I'ma Let you finish, but...

If you're referencing my desires to "rock" well upholstered young ladies - OK...

If you are refering to my own upholstery, that has been greatly reduced of late....

I was referring to well upholstered ladies mate, not your good self.

As you know, I do actually name all of my guitars and the newbie has been christened "Afghan" in your honour.

You should be so proud.........  ;)

Thanks Steve - but I'll need to sell something before I can buy anything else.  And I don't want to sell anything!

OK, bit more of an update after playing it for a while last night.

The setup out of the box is perfect - it plays soooooo slickly.  It's right up there with my Modern Eagle for build quality and playability.  I completely agree with Guitarist magazine giving it 5 stars for both those areas.  The only negative was that the pickups were a little sloppy in the rings.  I added some foam underneath to stabilise them, but I'll probably try and find some stronger springs instead.  Not bad if that's the only negative on the entire guitar!

Tonally, it seems to like a little bit of time to warm up.  Not sure if that's just me getting used to the guitar, but it seems a little brittle at first then really warms up and sings.  People say a similar thing about rosewood neck guitars, so maybe it's a paduak thing?

The coil splits are the best I've heard/played, hotter pickups overall really help with this.  Having the flexibility of two tone and two volume controls is something I’ve been missing, and with the splits as well it makes a seriously versatile guitar for live use.  I put it through my gigging pedalboard last night and the cleaner tones with chorus and delay sound fabulous.  I’ve swapped my overdrive back to my BB Preamp as that seems to work really well with this guitar, into the lead channel it gives this big singing tone that sustains for days.  Really, really nice.  Top fret access isn’t quite as good as my ’65 SG, but it’s not far off even for a singlecut design.  Other than in DC, I don’t tend to be playing too much up at the 22nd fret so it’s not an issue.

At this point, for purely live use, I’d say the PR Guitar is going to be better than my Modern Eagle  :o  That’s some achievement as I love my ME, but I don’t take it everywhere for fear of it being nicked/damaged etc.  The SCR is going to be a very fine substitute, and much more easily replaced should the worst happen!

So, all things considered, this is one seriously impressive guitar and an absolute steal for the price I paid.  Ok, the shape is a little unusual, but once it’s strapped on you don’t notice it and it’s very comfortable.  It feels quite 'flat' to play, like an SG or a Tele, so it suits me very well.

Tone trumps all, and this thing has it going on.  I like.  Lots.

are you sure that's not just your ears getting used to the brighter tone?

i only say it because that happens to me all the time. I'll be playing a guitar or pedal which I think is too trebly (or warm), then after playing it for a couple of minutes it becomes "normal", and the other guitars/pedals which i previously thought were "normal" are now suddenly too warm (or bright).

Another update on this guitar, just for the doubters and naysayers

"Afghan" got his first gig under his belt just over a week ago and performed superbly.  I used him for the entire 2 hour set, playing with a huge variety of tones and tracks:

* Split bridge – Brown Sugar by the Stones (light crunch, sounded really Tele-like!)
* Full bridge – Holy Diver by Dio (heavy with lots of gain, played in drop D a la Killswitch Engage)
* Split middle position with mixed volume settings – Wanted Dead Or Alive by Bon Jovi (clean with chorus and delay, great 12-string impression)
* Full neck – Castle In The Sand by Thunder (first solo with some gain, really singing rock tone)

I didn’t once feel like I needed a different guitar, and with such great tones under my fingers I could just relax and get on with the job in hand.  Very, very refreshing and inspiring.  I still can’t believe how cheap this guitar was compared to its quality and abilitites, and how much use I’m going to get out of it.  A fellow guitar player at the gig was really impressed with it and described it as a cross between an SG (zingy and bitey) and a Les Paul (punchy and beefy), which sums it up perfectly!

I’ve now fitted a set of straplocks and cured an odd static issue with the cavity control cover screws, so it’s ready for anything!
