Lately we have played at some nice smaller pubs where the atmosphere has been great but the available space isn't. So I very nearly bought a 1 x 12 combo the other day but backed out as I don't really want or need another amp (yet at least). I just need a compact rig that sounds good. So, rather than take a Cornford half stack, I will take either a Crate powerblock or JTM45 with a 1 x 12 cab... but what cab? I have been looking at the Mesa ported Thiele? cabs but they're expensive and do they sound as good as they make out? What about the Marshall 1912 with the 150watt speaker.. any good? I've seen Orange 1 x 12's too which look nice and compact too. So, I want compact and I would like something that is not going to be too directional so would an open back be better?

Your help would be appreciated!

Speak to MJW.  My choice:

A semi-open MJW 1x12 with a Celestion Gold, plus your JTM45.

Tone baby, tone!

I love my 2x12 with Golds, and I can't see why a 1x12 wouldn't be just as good.  The Gold is 50w rated, and so would be fine with your '45.

Just depends how much you want to spend I guess...

'nother thumbs up for an MJW 1x12. Very pleased with mine.

I emailed Martin earlier today and asked for a 1x12 to be added on to my order, got an EV12L going in it though  8)

Just like the one I have?
I'm biased but I think it's rather good

Great choice Pete !

I have a pair of EVM12L Classics waiting for the call to duty - and as a result, the builders have had to re-enforce the floor joists . Be warned, I gather that the cone begins to 'howl' / distort some time after the rest of the street has already crumbled with the sonic pressure.

EVM12L Classics = 'God's own speaker'

EVM12L Black Label 'The Devil's usual fall back option'.

Best 1x12s you can get IMO are:

-Bogner Cube
-Mesa Thiele
-Port City
-Bogner OS 1x12 Shiva cab

If I were you I would go 2x12 ported or open back though, mixing speakers is fun and creates a richer sound.

Thanks for the input guys. The truth is my Mongotone 4 x 10 is a superb cab and is quite narrow and compact, a 2 x 12 is wider. I know I could stand a 2 x 12 on it's side but I never got on with my old Mesa Recto like that. The Mongotone is so good that if I had the spare cash I would just call Marc and ask him to build me one. It's because I need cash I'm having to sell the 4 x 10... it's absolutely stupid really but I'm selling that over my Cornford 4 x 12 only because the Cornford matches my amp. It does sound good very good, but the Mongotone is just better? I do think that now I've had a few solid wood (as opposed to ply) cabs that they do add an extra dimension to the sound, thicker and yet livelier. I know I should contact Marc at Mongotone or Martin at MJW really but it's all about cash!

As little as possible!

Seriously I'm going to have to sell to buy, so if I see something or someone has a cab to sell and it fits the bill I'll sell something to buy it. I'll have to do a multi item sell on the dreaded Ebay real soon I think... and i hate that bloody place.  :(
