Look what I found!
« on: March 25, 2010, 02:42:57 PM »
Well not me but someone clearing out a room in my house. This has been missing for about 2 years, I knew it was somewhere in the room but couldn't find it myself. You really had to see the room to appreciate how even a doubleneck Strat body could get lost in such a mess...

Anyway! This is the first Strat body I built. I never got round to taking pictures of it completed, only the in-progress shots of me building it. So here are some phone photos. I'm really proud of this one, apart from a couple of dents that had to be filled from bad storage just after I built it (lessons learnt), its perfect, unique, and you really would have to look hard even in person to tell that it's 3 pieces of Korina, because of the quality of the hide glue joints I made with a hand plane.

The cr@ppy phone photos don't do this justice, it looks beautiful in person. It's frustrating that I've temporarily run out of funds (and workshop space), as the 6 and 12 string Sapele Mahogany necks are only half-finished...  :(

That's gorgeous, and I bet it'll sound great too. I like the tone of mahogany strats but they're a bit heavy. Great joinery too, very subtle.

Are you really planning on a trem for the other neck? Oh, I was assuming you were going with 12-string but that's no fair assumption.

Can't believe I've never thought of the concept of a doubleneck strat! :D

cheers guys  :D

i was thinking Callahan vintage trem for the 6 string, then a hardtail 12 string neck on the other side. the necks will have Cocobolo fretboards with block inlays, and the headstock faces + guitar body will be painted with black nitrocellulose.

Warmoth do a doubleneck strat body which is where I got the idea, but I don't like how it loses symmetry:

so I made my own template by tracing round a Strat template twice in 2 locations a fixed width apart on some MDF, then drawing in the corrections to make it one doubleneck body. the body is actually pretty light considering its 18" wide, and is probably no more heavier than a lot of single mahogany strat style bodies out there...

Egh, that takes all that is wrong about the Fender offset waist a la Jazz Bass, Jaguars and amplifies it. I like the curves of my Jazz but that strat looks like it's melting. Symmetrical doublenecks look so much better, just look at the SG1275. And Claudio Sanchez from Coheed & Cambria can chuck it around like it's nothing!

Personally I don't think block markers suit Strats but that's just preference.

Only single coils in the 12 neck? For some reason it seems unnatural but there's not much of a "norm" for electric 12 strings

I think it looks great and has been done to a very high standard. I can't recall ever seeing a double neck Strat. You've got to get it finished so we can have a drool.

There's a BKP Trem!?!?! Awesome! I'll probably end up using that then - are there any threads/pages with more information on this?
