Musicman BFR JP6 guitar
« on: March 26, 2010, 09:35:26 PM »
I find the specs very attractive, especially the piezo..

Has anyone tried one of those ?
Are they worth the price ?

And the most important thing of course : has anyone tried to replace the di Marzio pups with some BKPs  :D and is it easy to do ?

thanks !

I haven't tried the JP, but I've liked the couple of musicmans/men I've been able to try.

That's all I've got.

I know that Joe Kataldo has replaced the P/ups in his JP6, might be worth firing him a PM to see how easy it was

Hello,

I have the JP6 with a Piezo.  2008 model in metallic charcoal gray.  It is a most excellent guitar for a few expected and then other nice surprises.   I have a few guitars, this is the go to baby.

It is a very easy to play guitar.   The purchase was based on playability, asymetrical neck is a very interesting design, and then of couse a most excellent Piezo pickup system.  I believe it is one of the best offered.   The tailpiece was a surprise on how good it works and it is resistant to going out of tune when playing live and one may get a little carried away by the moment and rest your hand on it.  Very stable when touched or leaned on.  Much better than my old Ibanez.  The piezo pickup blends in stereo with the magnetic pups.  Honestly, the neck pup and piezo come off with a STELLAR Knopfler tone.  Dial in more of the neck pup and get the 'Telegraph Road' tone.  There are bass/treble pots on the back of the guitar, very useful.  I play a Boogie MKV and Rectifier live.  The Rec gets switched off at the A/B/Y switch and the piezo can get too peaky for the MKV if you don't back it down on the guitar.  That keeps it from compromising the tone settings on the amp.  Handy.  That Piezo & Neck pup combination is a sweet one, the kind that inspires one to take long solos and noodle a bit too much instead of practicing.
The stock pups are the best of all the stock pups I have at the moment.  Ibanez RG, Fender USA strat (stock) Dimarzio Super Distortion in neck, Dimarzio X2N in bridge of 72 SG, ESP Skully KH model with EMG's.

I am going to swap out some pups for BK's but the ones in the JP6 are not candidates for swap.  I have pretty much decided to get some Riff Raffs for my SG and Nail Bombs for the Ibanez RG.  There may be some Apaches in store for the strat....

Peace,
Softail

I've played a friend's and the only thing I can say by way of criticism would be that the neck wasn't my cup of tea (but I don't get on with Music Man necks in general or any others that combine a noticeable 'hump' on the back with a short radius. The sharper the hump and the shorter the radii the worse for me and I find Music Man guitars are just on the edge of being comfortable.).
I too use chicken as a measurement.

Thanks guys !

I noticed that the JP6 now comes with an alder body with a "mahogany tone block" - don't know really what design is this but this sounds cool. (I thought they only were available with a with a basswood body...) Anyway here are the specs for those who are interested :

My music man also has a piezo in it that you can blend with the other pickups.

The piezo was too bright and loud for me.
It took me 6 years to realise that as well as the controls on the top of the guitar, if I removed the back plate there were a further 3 controls to shape the piezo tone.

Now I use it more often. It would sound great through an acoustic amp

I agree the Piezo does sound great.  I also blend it, mainly with the neck pickup for a fattened up bluesy bit.  Funny the neck on the JP6 specifically is not like all the other Music Mans, with the asymetrical rear shape.   Necks are a funny thing though, either you like 'em or not.  I can't be asked to play the old 'Deep V' style necks for any leads whatsoever.  Guess it is what's you have gotten used to.
