NGD+NAD! (Tele+Laney content)
« on: March 29, 2010, 01:48:32 PM »
Weekend of GAS!

I traded my SG Special for a lovely MIJ 62 Reissue Fender Custom Telecaster. Also added to the herd is the little Laney VC15 combo.

:D :D :D

Been after a Tele for a while (I blame this forum) as I didn't have any single coil guitars and got this offered in a trade and it fits the bill perfectly. Wasn't sure about the binding but it looks stunning in person! Equipped with a German made handwound neck pickup and a singlecoil sized P90 in the bridge that's coil tappable for low/med/high output. The electronics need upgrading though as they have very little usable range. Any tips/recommendations? At the moment the neck sounds perfect but the bridge is a bit dark sounding which was a bit unexpected. Will changing the pot value to 500k do the trick?

Laney VC15 is a fantastic little valve amp with more than enough gain available by itself. Tried it in a shop and I knew I had to have it. Luckily a barely used secondhand one came at a good price so I snapped it up. I've been continuiously in search of a VERY portable but versatile and good sounding amps but I think the search has ended. Can't believe how small it is. I used to own a Laney VH100R + 4x12 cab set up and this amp brings back memories. Definitely the same family of sound. Killer crunch and chimy cleans. Great usable spring reverb (Accutronics I believe) waaaay better than the one that was in the AC15CC1X. I've yet to crank it up and I'm slightly worried about the size of the cab and whether it'll rattle or not, but I know I can always plug into a 4x12 if I must. Once again, I'm very impressed by Laney!!

Nice guitar and amp.  I had a VC15 for a while and thought it was great.  I sold it to trade up to the VC30 as I needed a bit more headroom but they are great sounding amps.  I seem to remember the master volume was very good, with decent crunch at low volume.

With regards to the Tele, try a Fender No load pot, it should brighten the bridge pickup a little.  Or some steel saddles, I have Glendale ones and they add a certain zing to things....

That is a great set of choices there !  :D

Not only a great sonic combination ,  and  good deal on both ;  but also  they look great as well.  A very flexible and   universally appealing rig , from modern stuff ( I.E. after 1974   ) - to great old R&B , Soul , Rock'n'Roll, and Blues tones. When not in use, they should be left out for people to drool over .

Nice one.  :)

Teles with binding are increasingly turning my head these days and yours is no exception.  I've never heard that Laney amp but it certainly looks very cute.  Good scores both.

These '62 Custom double-bound Teles are indeed very addictive. I feel a bit ashamed, but since I got mine (well... since I put BG50s on it to be true), I barely touched my beloved Vox at all  :?

@LazyNinja: happy New GAS Day BTW

Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Nice scores Ninja. I have a MIJ 62 too.The small pots and cheap switch I changed for Fender USA items.I also swapped the bridge to a brass three barrel, its thicker metal then the stock bridge. The pups in mine are Yardbirds but I prefer Blackguards so might snag another set.

I have a Candy Apple Red MIJ 62 too.  I put the new wind of the BG F50 in it and it is a great blues machine.  The Yardbirds would have probably been my choice except they sound extremely close to my real 62 pickups in my 62 Tele.
So many pickups, so little time
