Couple of questions for cat owners
« on: March 29, 2010, 06:45:52 PM »
Chaps, I'm hoping you can help me with a couple of questions about a cat that we've just adopted from the RSPCA and have been settling-in for the past 2 months.  He is @ 4 years old, a tom and is neutered.

1. We're going on holiday this year twice - one time for 1 week, another for 2 weeks later in the year.  Is it kinder to put him in a cattery or leave him at home to come and go as he pleases through the catflap with a visitor coming in once a day to give him his food and say hello?

2.  What, in your experience, are the best catflaps to buy?

Many thanks,

Mike.

1.  From a home security point of view, I'd use the cattery.  It depends on the cat though, one of ours just wails the place down so we have to take to her one of our parents for holidays.  I'd try the cattery first.

2.  Not got one, so can't help I'm afraid!

We've done both. In some ways I'd say let him stay at home but I have heard reliable stories of Cats going looking for their owners and that could be bad if they get lost or disorientated and lose out to a car. At least with a cattery you know that they are likely to survive intact and most catteries will let you go and see the accommodation. The one we used last year was like a hotel. We did have top put up with a bit of a bad mood from one of ours but she soon forgave us and in no time, was enjoying watching our holiday video.

As for cat flaps, we have one that is fine- made by Staywell. Superb tone but I haven't compared it against others- it does the job though and has been in place about 10 years with just a few minor repairs needed due to a neighbour's son's exuberance with a football.

We tend to put ours in a cattery, because she's a soppy bugger and a bit of a lard-arse, and she gets so stressed out in the cattery it's a good way to get her to lose weight.

38th Beatle is correct about the tone of the Staywells - non-trem only though, cause we all know that they suck tone.

Incidentally, our "wuss" of a cat once smashed the flap clean off a Staywell catflap - she was being chased by a slightly bigger cat.  the flap ended up 10 feet into our front room...

Great tone though.

We always took ours to the cattery. Aside from anything else, because there may not have been much left of the carpets and furniture if we didnt.

If the cat is traumatised it might have fear of being left alone or fear of being in a different environment.

Having animals is a responsibilty. That might mean you have to cancel your holidays.

Whether the above was said with utmost sincerity, or the last line as a gentle joke ; I must confess that after seeing what immense trauma it caused my elderly cat , when I last went away for about ten days ( despite an alleged cat sitter, who must have just changed the feed and litter ) I now am reluctant to leave the chap alone, unless a proper 'live in' can be secured. The evidence suggested that he had fearfully crawled under the duvet, and stayed put for a long time, having defecated over several days - and lost weight.

The task of dealing with the cleaning,  was  the least I could do - and bringing the poor chap out of his traumatised state, took a very intense / attentive week or two. For me, it was too much to inflict upon an old friend - who of course ( as a rescued from abuse  kitten ) sees me as his trusted 'parent'.

Of course it depends on the cat, and the quality of available surrogate care ; but it was a 'Bridge too far' for me to ever repeat without comprehensive measures being left in place. Meanwhile, the old lad nourishes my world more than any holiday might be required to.

We'd never take our Dweezil to a catery.  The little bugger just sleeps all day anyway.

The longest we've been away for is three weeks and we leave her at home with a neighbour to feed and water (and play with) and we don't have a single problem.   The cat flap is always open so she can come and go as she chooses.

As for catflaps, we had to get a magnetic one as one of the other local cats kept coming in the house and pissing up the walls, this and my cat would fight with it in the kitchen at 4am.  Magnetic flaps are OK, but sometimes your cats collar will twist round and they wont be able to get (and also smack their head on the catflap).  Also, if the problem cat has a magnet too, then it's still comming in.

Personally, if the cat is Ok on its own, I'd leave it at home where is knows where it is.... so long as the neighbour also gives it a bit of fuss.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

No joke, I am sincere.

I have an adopted cat. Poor guy has suffered major physical and psychological trauma before he was rescued. He doesn't trust strangers. He trusts me but not for the full 100%, he's always a bit weary.

Most cats are place bound some are owner bound. I have both kinds so no holidays for me.

Thanks to everyone for their replies.  It's too complicated, I'm having the little bar-steward put down.

Catmate Flaps flaps are good.  The flap broke once due to our cat at the time, who always came in at 100mph.  The previous flap he managed to take off of the door and we found him wearing it at the top of the stairs.

As for holidays we always have the neighbours or the inlaws come and feed once a day. I do the sam with my parents cats and have never had any problems.

Of course I'm kidding!   I'm very attached to him, if anything I have new parent syndrome and am starting to think about cancelling my holiday.  No need as it turns out - we have a good cattery near us and my wife's family all live close, so we're going to arrange for someone to nip in and say hello every other day so that he has regular familiar company.

Anyway, I couldn't have something this cute bumped-off.....
