Vox Custom 24 for sale
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:01:57 PM »
No, I'm not selling mine, no way, never !!!

But I spotted this '83 vox custom 24 and thought I might share:

If it's in good condition, at £395 it's a bargain. Swap the cr@ppy stcok X2Ns for a good pair of BKPs (hint : the Crawlers work just fine on this), and you have a killer axe .

Built by Matsumoku at its best period (late 70's / early 80's). Going-thru maple neck, maple sides, rosewood fretboard, MOP inlays, flawless built and finish (mine at least but the very rare other owners that cared writing a review somewhere all agree on this). Neck is thin C profile, 10'' radius IIRC, and feels very good, 24 frets with a very easy access event to the last one. It's a bit on the heavy side (about 5kg) but very well balanced.  Top quality hardware, stays in tune for weeks.

Globally, and despite being all-maple, this guitar belongs to the LP family wrt/ tone and feel, with possibly a hint of a Rickenbacker (possibly from the going-thru maple neck). It has very tight but present lows, singing & shouting mids, and chimey highs, lots of harmonics, and sustains for days. Mine is not very resonant - even a bit stiff - unplugged, but sounds great with the right pups and is very responsive.

It comes stock with DiMarzio X2N pups, and that's really the weirdest (if not the worst) possible choice IMHO. I swapped them for Crawlers, and now it really shines - I've played €1500+ guitars that felt like lame jokes compared to it. If I had the money I'd buy this other one, even if just to make sure it won't go to some clueless bozo. Ok, you bet, I'm in love with this guitar, and whatever else I play I always come back to it. Nuff said.
