Miracle Man in RG using JCM2000 with bad monkey
« on: April 18, 2010, 12:19:59 PM »
Hey just  a quick clip to test the bad monkey and again still trying to find a good mic positioning.

Unsure on how this all sounds mixwise as i did it using some earphones as they were better than the terrible laptop speakers.

Let me know how it sounds.

Now that all the moving is done im looking to buy some proper monitors and a decent mic interface to replace the line6

i don't like this tone. sorry but i can't find a softer way to say it... it lacks punch and presence, but of course i can't tell if it comes from your rig or from a bad EQing... i don't like metallica at all, and i always hated their tones as well - so my judgement is biased - but you should "open" it up a bit, to make it sound a bit more thrashy and aggressive.
that's just my opinion, of course!

The basic sound isn't that bad but it is badly lacking of highs. It soulds very very "dull".
Try moving the mic closer towards the cap center. Maybe other eq settings would be helpful as well.

Some proper monitors are definitely a good investment!

good solid playing dude, the tone is easy enough to play around with and for me it's better a little dull than bighting
your head off. i hear what the other guy's are saying though and taken the right way constructive criticism is useful.

i've just managed to listen to this ona  proper pair of speakers and i see exactly what you guys mean.

I am really struggling to capture the sound that i hear when playing.

I know its not 100% possible to capture the exact sound but i believe it shouldnt be as far off as this.

what do you recommend to increase punchiness and clarity?

also where do you guys place your mics?

i had this off axis about 1 1/2" from the cone and about 1/2" from the speaker grill.

Thanks for all of your feedback.

I'm not really an expert on this but I'll try to share my thoughs - maybe it will get you a little closer to the sound you seek.
Try moving the mic closer to thte grill for a more 'in your face sound' (proximity effect). Also try to place the mic on axis instead of off axis - this will give you more highs and hopefully more clarity.

You could also try using 2 mics. One centered on the cap for the brightness (off axis in case it's too bright) and a second one more towards the cone (maybe off axis) to get the chunk and low end. Mixing these can get you nice results.

But it's all about trying around - the slightest change can make a big difference.

Hope this helps a little.
