Painting a Swamp Ash Body and have questions
« on: April 21, 2010, 05:19:57 PM »
I am getting a swamp ash tele body and would love to finish it in a sonic blue using ReRanch's aerosols just a few questions for you. Seeing as its an ash body should i use a filler? I was planning on using the "white wash" as i call it so then would a filler be needed before the white wash still? I dont want it to look like a factory finish with super thick layers and super glossy, i honestly dont even mind if you can feel the wood grains and bumps, if anything i may like that. What's even the purpose of a grain filler? Finally one can is good enough to finish a body huh? Should i use the whole can or just to my liking? Do the coats fade over time? I've never done this before but am excited =) If you could just clear this up for me that would be amazing! =)
=) Cheers and God bless =)

ash is super grainey, which is why it needs a lot more filler to get it flat

i would fill, but go over to the reranch forum as they will be able to help you out with suitable products and have a lot more quality finishing info than we do here

Swamp ash is very grainy and "bumpy" as you put it. Coarse grain pattern areas may even be a bit punky. Any filler or primer you put on it will cause some swelling and uneven areas. You will have to sand and refill or re-prime at least once and more likely twice or thrice to get it smooth and flat.
I chose a transparent finish and did not grain fill my Tele body. Just WB dye, then burned the grain with a heat gun.
It has a grain pattern that you could trip over!

Okay cool thank you guys, i will definitely get the filler and use it. Now could i get the grain filler and white premier at a hardware store and then just get the nitro paint at reranch? I know it should be only 3-4 bucks for a can at a shop, ya know? And further more do you know if a hardware store would have baby blue lol 0=)
