I can't comment on the Black Dog, but I can say that my VHII absolutely nails Gilbert's tones. The low output does mean you have to work them pretty hard, but the payoff is the open-ness and dynamic range you get.
A higher output pickup that would work very well for that sound would be the Rebel Yell.
