oh, for fu** sake...
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:40:57 PM »
Sold a bunch of stuff on eBay this week with no issues.  Someone just used bin on a sleeved and shocked rack case (about 15kg). The auction said collection only and when he requested more pictures in an e-mail I said 'please be aware - item is collection only'. 5mins later he buys it and asks me to ship it... and is now saying he wont be able to come get it. Argh... O.K it's only a small priced item but still... I'm going to have to cancel the auction and pay the charges because he's illiterate. Another bidder said he was planning on bidding and taking a journey down and I said I'd rebate some cash because of the distance hew as willing to travel....

ARGH!

I feel your pain mate. I've had this happen to me a few times and it is very annoying indeed. I don't really think it is illiteracy though - I suspect they knew what they were up to and would see if they could get you to ship it. If you don't they've lost nothing.

Very very annoying.

I've given up on using ebay for most things.
I sold a tascam on there and the winning bidder didn't pay me AGES, then as soon as they did pay started a dispute saying I hadn't sent the item... So I posted the item as soon as they paid, then I get no emails about the tascam and the dispute is escalated to a claim... apparently I didn't describe the tascam as 'broken' in the add, and I sent a broken tascam... which is a lie! Paypal/Ebay said I had to refund the bidder and asked them to send back the item. I got a different tascam back with a broken PSU. I searched like CRAZY to prove it was a different unit but I couldn't.
So I lost my money, and gained a dodgy tascam.
I strongly considered going to the winning bidders house to brick their windows.

I've had this happen alot recently. Had a Strat on ebay and every question I got was 'can you ship it?', quite clearly said collection only, in the end I stopped replying to those messages, I was getting far too fed up.

Then recently I had my Marshall on ebay, clearly said pick up only and I get 'would you ship it?'. NO I bloody won't!.

The JVM weighs so much that shipping it would cost more than for them to drive to me and collect it themselves.

Oh and I had a cornford harlequin on ebay years ago, for pick up only. I get an email from some one in Netherlands asking if I would ship it. I said no, sorry.

Then when the auction ends, he's won it and asks me to ship it to him.

I had to search like made to find packaging and I lost money because I underestimated the shipping costs. He was happy with it though but that's the last time I'm doing that.

You may be right, Ian. I don't mind shipping stuff - I've sent a 17kg VHT to a bidder this weekend, but the size makes it manageable + I kept all the packaging it was sent in so it was an easy job. But a 6u flight case is a pain in the ass to send and pack. It's not all bad - I bought a VHT CL head off eBay yesterday and the chap delivered it himself this evening for 20quid petrol money AND gave it to me in a Marshall amp head, case/bag on wheels thingy. Swings and roundabout I guess.

Nightmare!

Worst eBay experience I've had was I sold an 80s Hamer Californian. I described it in exacting detail every blemish and mark as well as supplying pictures and saying I would take as many pictures as bidders would like.

I bent over backwards to all his requests trying to be a good seller. When it arrived he moaned that it had dings etc... all over it (all the issues I described) and was most upset as was expecting a mint guitar. He threatened to take legal action against me and contact the police etc... my response was go ahead (wife works for the police so knew I was in the right).

Anyway... I ended up with negative feedback and crabby emails from him and eBay because he didn't read the auction. He was German so perhaps his English wasn't great. But that's not my problem.

I would've taken it back for a refund if he covered the shipping costs and wasn't so aggressive but there's just no pleasing some people.

That's the kind of eBayer I like. The shame is that for every good eBayer there is probably a bad one.

Would you be prepared to ship it to nigeria? I could deposit 1 million into your account, all I need is £1000 as a sign that you want to go ahead with the deal  8)

The latest one seems to start

"I am in Hungary and I am interested in your guitar..."

Which bit about "I will only ship within the UK" don't they understand?

I'm going through similar eBay hassle at the moment. Despite my listing stating "I am only selling this as I need cash" (or words to that effect), I have so far received three emails saying "I know you're after cash but would you consider a trade".

I suppose it's a case of "there's no harm in asking".  I usually list guitars and guitar parts for UK sale only, but I always get people asking if I'll ship to mainland Europe, and I don't mind that - if they have good feedback and shipping is easy to arrange, I'll sell to them.  If they look dodgy or shipping is going to be a nightmare, I just tell them UK only.

I only get annoyed when somebody actually buys the item, then tells you they're in Belarus or wherever.
