recommend me a DAW
« on: April 28, 2010, 11:27:44 AM »
I want to start recording so I need a DAW, played with cubase years ago but really didn't get very deep into it

I'm on a PC with good hardware, vista 64bit, need one that supports drummer superior 2, I've been reading old posts and it looks to be between cubase, reaper and sonar

cheers

I think MDV is using 64bit Sonar. He would be the best person here to ask. Tom uses Reaper.

Sonar is supposed to be very good as is the newer versions of Cubase. They all do the same job, so you may do well to stick with Cubase if you've used it already.

I was using 64 bit sonar producer 7

I switched to reaper 64 :D

Superior 2 works great with it. Not so much with sonar (or I had trouble at any rate). The greater ease of use of sup2 was one of my reasons for switching.

Any reasons people aren't keen on ProTools? I really don't see any point in using anything other than Logic or Protools. Logic couldn't be any easier to use and comes with a shiteeload of stuff and ProTools is the standard. With plug-ins ProTools can be good for mixing and mastering too - I'm using Izotope Ozone mostly.

Yeah, you need maudio or digidesign, and I personally dont want either. Short of a protools HD rig, reaper and my fireface 800 is better, or at least as good (for me, that is - some people prefer protools, thats fine, some people prefer sonar, cubase, audition, great, whatever, I just dont want it to be tied to hardware and provided everythings stable and does all you need it to, it doesnt matter which one you use).

I'm in the process of installing logic 9 now. I'm going to run out of time tonight. Rehearsing tomorrow so not sure when I'm going to have a bash. The stuff it comes with is immense. I wonder if the amp modeller can give an Axe FX a run for the money? Cos i kind of want one of them too. Jeez, i've gone gear mad!

It comes up with a message something like

'The 30 day trial period has expired. Reaper is not free. Please purchase a license. This copy of reaper will continue to function normally since we do not believe that crippling software is in our or our customers interests. You have 6 seconds to think about buying a license'

Or words basically to that effect, with a 6 second countdown.

But if you dont buy a license youre quite frankly a complete moron and a tw@t; it has the functionality, more even, of DAWs costing hundreds and a private/small business (less than 20k USD per year turnover) is about 40 quid.

Uhh... no 8)
But can you DI your Koch into your interface? If you can then I recommend using that with Space Desinger and some cabinet impulses (Redwirez are excellent and not badly priced, there are some good free ones like Catharsis and GuitarHack's too so it's time to get Googling)

Thought not

I've been DI-ing my Koch into Cubase for around 5 years with an EMU-1820. The reason i want an Axe FX is to get harmonic feed back. They do it pretty well for a modeller. I'd have to run Koch very loud to get that and its not fair on my neighbours.

Thanks for the tips on the software lads  :D

Try touching your headstock against one of your monitors, that can help bring on feedback.
