Single Coil to Match With VHII
« on: April 29, 2010, 01:59:06 AM »
New member here with newbie questions.  My son and I are in the midst of our first guitar build....a custom Fender Jagstang from Warmoth.  My boy is the player....I'm the gear junkie

The build is from a swamp ash body and maple neck with maple fingerboard....of course it has the 24" neck also.

He wants a humbucker in the bridge and a single coil in the neck.

After going through the sound clips, we're really loving the VHII.  The slightly hot PAF style fills much of his musical tastes....classic rock...blues...Beatles...Cream....etc.....fairly broad range of tastes for a 15yr old kid.

Assuming that we would want the neck pickup to be in the 7.5k to 8.2k range...what Bare Knuckle single coil would match up well with the VHII in the bridge?

I'd probably go for an Irish Tour as my main concern would be getting enough clarity from the short scale length, although the woods are fairly bright so a Slowhand might be an option.
I don't think you'll go far wrong with either of those

I have a VHII paired with two mother milks in one of my guitars.  They work nicely together.  There is a slight volume increase switching from the single coils  to the humbuckler which I like though it may not be for everyone.

Im not sure what either pickup would be like with a maple finger board. Though some of the other guys from the forum may have a better idea on that one.

I have an alder superstrat with a VH2 Bridge and an Irish Tour in the neck, for me its the perfect combination, they balance perfectly.  I tried the slow hands but it didn't really work, cant comment on any other single coils, but i'm sure you wouldnt be dissapointed with an Irish Tour.

Thanks guys.  I was suspecting a selection in that range.  Does anybody know what the Irish Tour is wound to?  I know it will vary slightly from pup to pup...but what is the target baseline for it?

If a guy wanted to step up a notch for the bridge to say a Black Dog...maybe the Slow Hand would match better?

irish tour is the typical match for vh2

Product page says bridge 7.4k, middle/neck 6.3k. I'm sure you could specify overwound if you like, and add a baseplate for a bit more oomph.
