Bootsy's great, a true blend of nutter/genius.
My funk hero is Larry Graham.

I like funk but I don't like slappy bass so these clips don't do a lot for me though the playing is great. I like nice thick creamy warm bass.

I love that knackered old Strat Hiram Bullock (RIP) played in that Bootsy clip.

Edit:  Just watched the Larry Graham clip.  $%&#in awesome!  :o   I love the Phantom of the Opera bit (although it is not funk!)

That's the appeal of funk, the groove. For me, to play this kind of music effectively, you have to kind of feel the groove as you play it or it won't sound right. Just look how relaxed and confident all the musicians and vocalists are in that bootsy clip!
Funk was on the radio a lot in the 1970's, when we were kids! (for us 40 somethings)
I've got some brilliant funk on my iPod right now. I can burn you some discs if you want. Have a listen to early Kool & The Gang. Not the 'get down on it' or 'Joanna' era cos that was terrible (they did it for the cash!). It's pre cheesy vocalist bloke (who wasn't Kool but everyone thought he was). The level of muscianship is amazing.

The bass player I rehearse with doesn't like slap either, although he can do it really well. He is very into Jaco and can play amazingly fast but so relaxed too. We have been practising some Ian Dury tunes and he gets the Norman Watt Roy bass parts down to a T!
This is why my band project is frustrating Steve! He is so good but is depressed all the time and thinks he is cr@p!

I agree about the groove- tis all important. I love bass players like Willie Weeks because he is just so....erm..groovy. Combined with Andy Newmark on drums- bliss.

All I know is that when I'm drunk at a wedding and the funk hits the disco, bad, bad things happen 8)

Here's a really insightful and informative story on the origins of funk.

Great stuff! I've heard the live shows are supposed to be really good. I've still not seen all the tv episodes yet.
I did go and see George Clinton in the 90's. They do shows so different to rock bands. 2 drummers, 2 bass players, 3 guitarists and loads of other weird stuff going on. They played all night too.

The Meters: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNzilDmPpCg

The JBs with James Brown: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh177T0wFM0

And heading in the direction of disco but still funky, The Fatback Band: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZlugpXNnoE

I love all of this stuff.  James Brown's "In The Jungle Groove" is one of my absolute all time favourite records.  If your feet don't tap to "Give It Up or Turnit A Loose" you're clinically dead. :)
