Do I even need a neck pup?
« on: May 04, 2010, 06:41:54 PM »
I'm going to order a ceramic Warpig for a bridge pup in a couple days.  I'm playing "extreme" metal and such, and don't really use a neck pup except for dabbling in stoner/doom, or solos.  I'm pinching pennies so it's probably not worth the price to get a matching calibrated set, right?  It'd be great to get both, but that's about 150 dollars extra I can keep in my pocket, or put towards a new amp.

Also, would there be any problems if I put them into an Ibanez JS100 now, but switched them to an Agile AL series eventually?  The bodies are very different, so I'm not sure if the spacing or arms could be an issue.

I never use a neck pickup, so I ended up getting a custom guitar without one. If you don't use it often, just get yourself a killer bridge pickup and keep saving for if and when you decide to come back for more! :)

You can always buy a neck pickup at a later date, so no, there's no particular reason why you can't buy just the bridge if you hardly use the neck.

On the subject of specs, unless one of your guitars has some odd routing (like triangular feet or a pickguard with rounded corners), short legs & 53mm spacing are going to fit a fair majority of guitars out there...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

i love neck pickups, even if in real band situations i use them much less than bridge pickups, of course... i couldn't live without one, but if you're short on money i'd say to upgrade just the bridge - it will make most difference in your tone, after all!
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

I personally couldn't live without a neck pup. I just write songs that have a lot of different techniques and register shifts. I would puss out and "not be able to" play most of the stuff I wrote on the neck. Me doing sweeps on a bridge pickup sounds hacktastic. Being a prima-donna is so difficult.

But if you don't use a neck pickup don't bother. Get a kickass amp instead.
