Need help buying guitar for a mate
« on: May 10, 2010, 07:05:41 AM »
Hey guys,
My mate in england is having a birthday this year (like always) but his girlfriend wants to buy him a guitar since hes hittin 30 and apparently she must need to make him feel better about that  :D
but yeah shes asking my advice and trying to keep it a secret which makes things a lot tougher

so shes got maybe upto a grand to spend, but prefereably less unless its super awesome.

hes into LP's, but hes always hated the switch location since he flails his arms around too much while rockin out, so i was thinking maybe a Gibson LP doublecut, perhaps a standard since im not really into the fadeds (dont know what he thinks about them), otherwise was thinking of just telling him to get over it and just get him an LP with the standard switch location, can always get it unwired and moved to a push/pull i guess?

if i was to go for LP what would you suggest? i saw the recent thread about edwards, and seen a lot of good comments about them (but never seen one to play), are they a better choice than a gibson special?

otherwise you guys got any other ideas for a decent option? i saw philly q's mira and thought that might be a reasonable option otherwise?

cheers

How about a Hamer double cut? Very nice guitars.

It's a great option, I'll take cash or cheque, or Paypal if you insist.

But seriously, the Mira is a lot more SG-ish than LP-ish.  What about something like this?

Upon reading his initial post, that was exactly what I was going to suggest!

I was mostly kidding, but you're absolutely right - the Love Rock II is very much an LP with a simplified control arrangement.  If you can live with the weight (which I guess you can if you like LPs).

cheers philly, i was thinking about that tokai as well, cant remember what his opinions on that colour scheme though.
when i was in a band with the guy he bought an ibanez ax (i think thats the model) which was similar to the mira style, except it was absolute shiiiteee. then he borrowed my epi LP for ages and thats when he started liking them (its actually a good epi :P ), so something like that could be on the cards.
i think that blue LP lite is a bit outrageous for him, think hed prefer something not as colourful

Ill send his girlfriend some more links to see what she thinks
are you london phil?

That Tokai D/C looks great, could be ideal. If someone bought it for me I'd be real happy.
