Been listening to a bit of Saxon lately - and i love their tone!
Does anyone know what they're using? I had a look around their site, and found pics of les pauls and axis and Laney amps... but that was in practice sessions, and there was a lot of other stuff that i couldnt make out lying around. I'm just curious - sounds so good! Anyone else into Saxon around here? I'm suprised there isnt more people loving them on here actually - they sound like a band that you forum guys would enjoy!
LOVING the Mules!

Yeah I love Saxon, and pretty much all the NWOBHM bands - Diamond Head being my favourite. As for the tone, no idea   I've been getting a good Saxon style tone from my Hot Rod DX and keeley rat

I've only ever heard 'Just let me Rock'. I was amused by how many pinch harmonics were in the song .  :P

Oh god Saxon - reminds me of being 12 when I first got into metal. I've heard that their earlier stuff was supposed to be the best, but Biff wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. As for Diamond Head - tried listening to them before Metallica's fifth album came out but never could understand why Lars rated them so much. Also Armored Saint (John Bush who joined Anthrax) was another band I tried listening to but found it boring.

On the Kerrang awards there was obviously loads of new Welsh bands who are clearly the best hopes for metal here, but I'm not surprised nobody mentions Tigertailz ha ha.

I've seen Saxon 2x times, along with Accept, Nuclear Assault, Diamond Head, Dio + Metal Church 8)

A veritable cheese salad of 80s metal :)

Accept were superb, and so were Metal Church (a drunk 40something dutch guy told me he;d seen them 20+ times and the re-union gigs had been better than when the bands were active!)

Pretty lucky to see all these older bands live (especially Maiden doing the Early Years tour!).

Cant wait for next year, goin to see Celtic Frost and Emperor 8)

Two more bands i NEVER EVER EVER thought id see  :)

I've got a Saxon video on Betamax somewhere.  From what I remember they used strats and Marshalls but I guess that doesn't help much.
Mother's Milk.  Mullard.  Cornford.  Mmmmm....

I remember reading the inlay of one of their live concerts which said what they consumed during the tour (i.e. what they disposed of) and I seem to remember reading they destroyed 80 guitars.

In the Saxon video one of them smashes up a guitar at the end.  But it's not the guitar he played during the gig.  He smashes up a cheapie guitar not his main axe.

:D Smashing up cheapy guitars is standard. After all the last thing you want to do is smash up your main axe !!!   :P

My ex-guitar teacher is in Saxon (Doug Scarrat), he used to use Laney VH100Rs and the other guitarist (can't remember his name) still does.
Doug is currently into rack gear and has alot of Mesa boogie stuff, he stays on the Vintage channel rather than the Modern channel as it gives him a better sound, also he has recently been endorsed by musicman and has a guitar by them (I think its the Luke), as for effects I don't think he uses many out of the ordinary.

Hope that helped.

I saw Saxon in the 80s - it was the most ridiculous (in a good way) stage show ever - huge steel bird thing, fireworks, the whole Spinal Tap lot.

If I remember rightly they played Strats.

I don't know why I went, I hated heavy metal but I remember it was a good night out.
