I recently did something I'd been looking to do for a while, which was to get myself a nice watch.  I picked up an Omega Seamaster 300M in black, like the one in the pic below.  As also worn by James Bond, no less  :lol:

I love it, and I can't believe I waited so long to get one.  The trouble is, I now want something a bit more casual to go with it  :roll:  Nice watches ain't cheap, so unless I suddenly get rich I'll just have to lust for one.

Moral of the story?  Don't ever, ever buy yourself an expensive watch.  You'll end up wanting more of them.......

Its a nice looking watch I suppose, if youre into that thing.

Personally I got a lorus somethingorother, a 'kinetic' watch that charges from motion when I was 18 - hasnt stopped, been opened or gone more than a minute out of time in 10 years (which was when I didnt set it for a year). Thats me totally watch gasless!

Sorry Dave, but that totally cracked me up!

There is no way I could ever get WAS, it's just not something I can get excited about, even if I won the EuroMillions or something.  Same with cars - I don't even drive, but if I ever do learn I'll get a Skoda or something, so long as it's cheap and reliable.

With the exceptions of guitars and (to an extent) HiFi and home cinema stuff, I just buy "something that does the job" then keep it until it breaks, however long that may be.

(My watch is an £8.99 Casio.  I also have a £23 Casio I bought in 1983, but I got a bit of eczema on my wrist last year and the metal strap seemed to be irritating it, so that watch is on sabbatical!  :lol: )

And is vastly more accurate than Twinfan's seamaster. :lol:

I've a mate that's mad into watches (and guitars as it goes, has A LOT of 50's/60's Fenders and Gibsons, him and Dave could be good pals) and his "cheap day to day watches" are generally £5k + affairs, we have many a gag about how "well, no it'll never be as accurate as a digital one, but it looks dynamite".

And he is, of course, absolutely right  :lol:

I really like TW Steel watches, but I could never justify spending real money on one  :(

I remember feeling like it was quite an extravagance when I bought my current watch for £120. It's a casio wave ceptor - radio controlled and accurate to the point of just showing off. The more useful aspect of radio control is that I don't need to remember when the clocks go back/forward any more. Having to explain that no, my watch is definitely not wrong, yours must be is more of a hassle than anything.

Don't think I'd ever get WAS either, it's one of a fairly few things that I just don't see the point in owning two of. I'd be more likely to buy a random forum member a LP standard than spend equivalent money on a watch which isn't as good as my existing one.

But now your PC is set from the same sort of source automatically (unless youre running one offline, obviously, but even then a CPU is probably a better timekeeper than any watch and would be right for ages from being set correctly once). I just check my watch very occasionally against one of mine. Its never out by much.

That's even harder to explain though! I spent about £60.00 on a watch about 18 months ago and that was enough for me. I am not that fussed about watches. But if it is your thing then if you have the cash, why the hell not?

I was going to buy a fancy watch a 2 year ago, but instead I bought a £20 one... the strap is falling apart now!

Trying to find nice watches with big black straps to balance out generic metal guitarists wrist bands is a bit of a pain.

Nice choice Dave  ;)  I had the blue and black side by side, and went for the black.  I'm classy, me  :lol:

For accuracy, it gains about 4 seconds a day so it's actually quite pants compared to the atomic watches and even Phil's £8.99er!  I'm a techie, so the thing I love is that there's a bunch of cogs and a big spring in there doing the work.  Plus it feels great to wear, and (I think) looks great.

I guess I suffer from SAS - "Stuff" Acquisition Syndrome  :lol:

If I ever get a huge pile of cash, I'd love one of these:
