I was gonna say that, but a CS LP does what it's designed to do better than a £200 guitar and a £8.99 Casio does it's job better than a £100,000 Rolex.

that's what i was going to say :D don't get me wrong, i'm sure a more expensive watch is "nicer", but in terms of its raison d'etre, a £100 (maybe even £10) watch is probably more accurate than a rolex. A £3000 guitar is a better guitar than a £300 guitar.

spend your money on what you want, of course. I just don't think the analogy with guitars is sound.

I think the analogy with guitars is 'similar'.  I sound pretty much the same on a £50 guitar or a £5000 guitar.  But they feel different to play, and the interaction/experience is different.  The £5000 guitar isn't always 'better', it depends on the parameters you choose to compare them with  ;)

It depends what you want it for I guess. I'd consider reliability and playability part of the purpose of a guitar, but I find it hard to accept that the qualities expensive watches have (Brand name? Better polished chrome?) could really make them good watches.

Everyone has different desires but I can only say that if you like watches, once you wear an elite one you understand.

Dan Spitz from Anthrax makes his own watches.
David Coulthard is supposed to be a very keen collector of sports watches.

I can see the appeal of expensive well made watches. I, on the other hand only have a Stainless Steel G Shock, that me Julie Bought me. It does add a lot of kinetic energy to my vibrato technique, as it's heavy.  :D

I guess part of what alot of you guys are saying is about accuracy, time keeping if you will. My watches are pretty accurate with the atom/ radio wave one being VERY accurate, the Kinetics ... 1 gains about 2 seconds a week whilst the other is more accurate than that at about 1 second a week. Then there is how much you wear your watches. I buy them to wear, and I mean whenever and what ever. I don't like my watches to get too beat up but inevitably they do get knocked and bumped when loading and offloading amps/ pa/ etc. When I'm fighting the dogs they may catch it with their teeth. Non of them are cheap, but non more than £600... but I do use them. They aren't left on the dressing table or in the draw, that just doesn't appeal to me to wear it once in a blue moon. It's a bit like my guitars. They ALL have bumps and knocks, and whilst that doesn't really bother me, I do ensure they play/ sound and work well. My attitude is that if I can't use something everyday I don't want it... I'm not a collector. Some of my mates have expensive watches and my favorite one is a Brietling... beautiful watch but still not as accurate as mine. Casio have always made watches that appeal to me too, especially the sport and G shock watches.... they are like the Tonka toys of watches... tough toys for tough boys!

I agree Don - I've got a G-Shock for knocking about with and it's great.  Solid as a rock.

Interesting discussion this, watches are obviously a bit marmite!

ye but now you can watch shaun the sheep in HD!!!!!!!

Only if I buy it on Blu-ray (unlikely)!  I don't have Sky and I suspect Freeview HD isn't going to work very well.... but we'll see.  :)

(Edit:  I've just set the TV up and it looks like Freeview HD is working fine!  :D )

I used a laptop and iplayer for a HD picture, was using it to setup the colours and etc

i disagree. i play and sound better on a "better" guitar (assuming it suits me). a "better" watch doesn't tell the time any better (though it may do several other secondary things better... comfort may even count as a primary thing). :)

I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not saying the more expensive watches aren't worth it. If you think they are, great. I just think the analogy doesn't hold up with guitars. A better guitar uses better wood, has better electronics and hardware, will have better workmanship, fret job etc., all of which directly affect how good an instrument it is. (Of course, maybe if you're into watches you'll also claim the same thing about watches  )

I've never tried marmite. i think their advertising strategy is backfiring there. I'm scared I'll be one of the people who hates it.

Mmm - I guess that I can see the similarities here - I got mine just because I'd always wanted one.... Same applied when I got my Les Paul - and I had arrived at a time in my life when I could afford one.

Mind you - I eased it past the Financial Controller by buying her a matching ladies version....

Seemed to do the trick!

Somethings worth whatever someones prepared to pay for it or do for it.

Good point about the comfort - subjective, I suppose, but I daresay that phillys presumably very light and rubber strapped digital watch is best. It is also probably very accurate and reliable.

We have a new winner! Accurate + reliable + comfortable = best watches on the planet are plastic digital ones. They're also the cheapest.

They're also where I draw the line. Digital in and of itself I dont mind, but I dont like wearing a plastic watch, I like wearing a well engineered bit of metal!

It can get a bit sweaty/sticky under the strap, to be honest, but I wear my watch loose so it's not much of a bother.

Accuracy's pretty good, it's gained about 6 seconds since I set it to BST so that's approx 1 second a week.

But more impotant than that:

Dave - I can't believe you've never tried Marmite!!  Get out and buy a jar man, it only costs about £1.30!!  :o
