Too Bright...
« on: May 12, 2010, 04:34:47 AM »
I've got a set of bareknuckle punch pickups that were in my epiphone LP. Now that I have Gibson, I threw them in there. The neck sounds as expected and impressive. The bridge though is so bright it's sometimes painful! I've adjusted the pickups, the poles and so on. No dice.

I've thrown in a 0.047 cap, but that really doesn't change anything when the pot is all the way open.

So, short of swapping out the pickup, is there anything I can do?

'Punch'? I assume that you're not referring to any BKP model with this. Anyway, what IS the pickup model?

There might be some wiring issue..

Sorry, it's an abraxis.  It's not the amp, I can dial everything back so that pitch goes away, but then the guitar is real dark, not what I want.  Could be a wiring issue, and I hope that's what it is, but I doubt it.

You could try a 250k volume pot, I suppose - but the ones in the Gibson may already be 300k in which case it wouldn't make much difference.

I'm wondering whether Zaned's on the right track...

Have you got 2 conductor or 4 conductor on the pickups? And if the latter, are you sure the bridge coils aren't wired out of phase now, or something?

I'd go with Philly.

Eventhough there should already be 300K pots in that guitar, pots can have quite a lot of tolerance. Try a 250K one as tone pot.

Put a meter across the pot and measure it. Most pots are not at the nominal value. I have seen 500K pots read any where between 450K and 550K. When the controls are dimed, pots that read too low make the pickups sound dull and conversely if way too high make the guitar sound thin and shrill.

It's a 500K pot.   The pickup has four leads.  I'm going to add some push/pull pots this weekend, so I'll review everything on the wiring side to see if that's the issue.

If not...I may have to swap it out.  :(
