Pickup ageing?

Hey
Do gold pick ups when aged turn to nickel?
in other words are they just nickel painted gold, so when the gold wears off it shows the nickel underneath?
I have a new guitar with all gold hardware and cant decicde the best route to take??
aged gold
opencoil black with gold screws/slugs
or the easier option of nickel/aged nickel (all though this might look a little odd)

I don't think it's gold paint, it's gold plate, but yes over nickel.
The gold plating is very thin, so it tends to wear through quite quickly and expose the nickel underneath (don't polish gold pickups with metal polish, it'll come right off!).
