When I was  playing in a Blues Brothers / Commitments style covers band, Mustang Sally was always great for the 'Ask a member of audience to join the singers' choice - and 'Brown Eyed girl'  very popular.  ( I hardly dare mention it Roo, but those two also sounded great played on a Telecaster - through a Laney or  Fender amp ; so forgive me, for I have sinned  :) )

No offence, Derek, but I hate "Mustang Sally" with an absolute passion!  :x

It's the Number One song for sweaty, lardy pub-singers/comedians to say "hey, look at me, I've got soul".  You can just imagine Freddie Starr or Paul Shane off of Hi-De-Hi dragging it out and mutilating it.

Sorry.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

My band plays Mustang Sally and I must admit I am not a fan ( I have to sing the bloody thing) but we've done a funky version that works pretty well considering- but that is a fat lot of use if you are doing an acoustic set-you'd have to do an acoustic type arrangement( no flies on me).
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance
BKP's: Apache, Country Boy, Slowhands.

No problem mate ; you have ( quite spookily ) described our most enthusiastic 'volunteers' to a tee !

It was worth it for the one time (at a well funded / staged Corporate function ) - that an absolutely  gorgeous , statuesque, young  Afro-Caribean lady in a slinky red silk dress - came forward ( As nearly did the drummer, bassist, Male singer and I at the time  :P ) to show how it should be done ...

I agree that musically and lyrically, it is 'nowt special' - but as you predicted, we kept it in the act as a fun bit of public / shared theatre.  Great for providing an 'open mike' with (ahem ) 'Lyrics' wholly sympathetic to, and attainable by, to those suffering from chronic Vodka amnesia.

As the theatrical sorts would say:

" I was giving my public what they wanted dear;   prostituting myself for the good of the greater ART within me  " ....  :violin1:

 :)

On the ballad front you could also do Time To Let You Go by the criminally underrated Enuff Z'Nuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGibro2cExQ
