Mother's Milk With Maple?

Hi

I'm new to this forum. :)

Ok so I have a Fender 50s classic Player Stratocaster with a maple neck.

I want to get that Hendrix/Frusciante tone, clean and dirty. But how do these pickups sound with a maple neck?

I emailed Tim and he said that they would sound Brighter, but does any  have any personal experience?

Also, the current pickups are Fender 57/62 Pickups. I am not too keen on them. How will the Mother's Milk Pickups compare to these?

I'll be interested to hear more response on this. What Tim has said to you does fit with my understanding about Mother's Milks and maple...

You might actually be interested to hear that I've just moved some Sultans out of a rosewood board strat into a Roadworn 50s with a maple board. That's getting me a lot closer to Hendrix (and Blackmore - earlier Rainbow and Deep Purple) than I've ever been before (in 20-odd years of trying :lol: ...never owned a maple board strat before... this one wasn't doing it with it's stock Tex Mexes either... but now.... yum!).

I would possibly consider Sultans... I know they're probably not the right magnets and all... but I'm not too worried with what was bubbling out of my speakers over the weekend :)

Did Tim recommend you a pickup/set for the tone you want? Or did you ask specifically about MMs? I suspect, but have no experience, that MM's could do it if you were using the tone controls like I do.

I'm not sure how Sultans and MMs compare. I was sold a couple of months back on the idea that Sultans are as bright as Irish Tours, but a sweeter brightness. I got them to try and brighten up a darker/warmer strat. They kind of did, but not loads, and then the Roadworn arrived and I felt like a bit of an experiment :lol: ... doesn't look like these Sultans are leaving this guitar in the near future...

For me, Mother's Milks might be the next option for the darker strat (the poor thing has had ITs and Sultans ripped from her now!) which is why I'm interested in the opinions you get...

You could think of Apaches- vintage tone for sure and normally the choice for maple fretboard Strats .

I was also going suggest Apaches.  I don't play Frusciante at all but I do a lot of Hendrix and SRV style noodling and the Apaches work really well for that.  They are very open sounding but they have such a beautiful chiming tone and they respond well to a Tubescreamer into an amp too - it's a great all-rounder and especially suitable to maple boarded Strats.  There's a lot of demos in the Players section, you should be able to refine your choice after listening to a few of those.  Welcome to the forum!

Yep, I'd been wondering Apaches too - but I knew there'd be at least one advocate for that.

By the way - I'm considering Apaches myself.

I have three options in front of me:

a) Maple Roadworn keeps Sultans, Rosewood CIJ keeps Tex Mex
b) Maple Roadworn keeps Sultans, Rosewood CIJ gets some Mother's Milks
c) Maple Roadworn gets some Apaches, Rosewood CIJ gets the Sultans back

I'm sticking with a) until funds grow again...

Threads like this will help me if I decide to go for more BKPs... :D

Well... Despite the obvious connection between Frusciante and rosewood early 60s strats and MMs, the "official" MM demo clip - by Tim himself - is on a maple strat.

Go figure...

apaches and mothers milks are both very balanced pickups which work in rosewood/maple board situations. plenty of posts here testifying to that :) i would follow tim's advice, although i think i personally prefer the mothers milk tone, but that was a rosewood board.

My previous post was very brief because I was pushed for time- welcome to the forum by the way, I have a set of Apaches in a 1970's Strat which has a rosewood board and I would echo gwEm's comments in that they are balanced and both MM's and Apaches dish out buckets of lovely Stratfulness. I am not in a position to compare the merits of  both sets I regret to say. I have played Strats with MM's and Apaches but not side by side and I am not that good at that sort of thing anyway. But what I can say is that my Strat has a great tone and I can get some very Hendrix like tones ( and I am thinking Little Wing clean types) almost without trying.I don't tend to use dirty tones but with the basic tone right, I couldn't see that as being difficult to achieve.
