Tempted to make a bad move?
« on: May 29, 2010, 11:13:29 AM »
So, pretty much as I'm starting to get my gear to my liking, I notice that my "local" guitar store is stocking Peavey 6505+ combos for £449. I've always been curious about the half-stacks, but put off by the size and price. But seeing this and realising how much I paid for my Engl Screamer (and how much they seem to go for) it seems I could pretty much get a "free" amp...maybe being up a few quid...

I've yet to try it out yet, but do you more experienced guys think this is worth it at all, or should I perish the thought?

Guitar Guitar in Glasgow...I said "local" since I live in Stirling, where there are actually 2 guitar stores, but they don't really stock much - Glasgow is the closest to go fot most things.

Seems a pretty decent deal - that is fairly well liked by the metal guys methinks (correct me if I'm wrong) but the thing is with guitarguitar (Glasgow's my local store too, and the only place up here to find anything remotely interesting) check that's definately the price as last time I went in to buy a pedal it was about £15 more than it said on the website.

And as I always say - go in and try it yourself, if you like it and it does what you need it to then surely thats the whole point cause it's you that has to live with it not the peer pressure community or any current scene.

As for the size - I'll take a wild guess it's about 50watt which is more than enough for live stuff, and pretty good for recording - if it has the ability to go down further then even better. Go try it though they've got that booth so it should be ok to put the volume up a bit.

I think I'll go give it a try at least. For a lot of the low tuned metal I play it should be great - if it can do passable Tool/Opeth type stuff, I might pick it up.

those newer ones are made in china, not the USA like the other ones. That's more or less the going rate.

Just to let you know.

Yeah, I noticed the standard 6505 212 was dearer than the heads. I don't mind Chinese/Korean/etc made gear, so long as it sounds good and is fairly well made. I'll give it a try this week sometime and decide which I like more: my Engl or the Peavey.

I was just getting myself a new amp for downtuned metal stuff, and have tried both amps out quite thoroughly. I too decided against a half-stack.

In the end I decided on getting the Screamer and am now in the process of paying for it over 6 months (with a few weeks left to go).

Could you tell me what you dislike about the Screamer and why you are considering selling it?

On-topic: Try the 6505 out, and if you like it better, maybe you should get it. It's all down to opinion, but only your own. Don't go on what others have told you - try it out for yourself and see.

Not really anything I dislike really, I just want to see which I prefer. If I don't think the 6505 is better, it is unlikely I won't sell the Screamer in the forseable future. If I prefer the Peavey, then I might go for it.

Yeah that's going rate for them at the minute. CC Music in the West End of Glasgow and Red Dog in Edinburgh are doing them at that too.

of course once you get it there's always the mod route, i hear there's some tasy mods for 5150/6505s. I used to love them, the combo was mighty, but too heavy and only really do one thing, if that things what your looking for though, go for it

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go for the Peavey. After trying it yesterday, I feel that the clean/lower gain stuff isn't actually that much worse and the lead channel is much more to my liking. And it looks like the "trade" will actually make me some money too.
