compact direct-in recording.
« on: June 04, 2010, 07:55:17 PM »
so
i'm about to start my night shifts for the next week.
Im going to take my macbook, as I like recording with Garageband, and my LTD w/rebel yells.

I have a Podxt, but its pretty big.
I just got a usb line in/out for my macbook, as prior to that I could not record and listen back on headphone at the same time.
I just spent a while playing with the built in emulators in garage band, but everything sounds like im playing with my neck pickup and it all sounds horrid. I prefer the Podxt apart from its size.

I was thinking about getting a Sansamp GT2 or something. Something small that will give me a good enough tone to not really annoy me, but not too heavy to carry about. Guitar > ? > Macbook.

anyone got any clips of stuff they've recorded in a similar setup?

Best I can think of is a UGM96

Its small and you can just use it as a DI with VSTs. I have one, but I dont wholly recommend it, its not the most stable thing in the world and I never use it.

Failing that, any small interface with a high Z input thats USB powered and the VST of your choice.

was going to suggest the DI and VST thing too if garage band supports them, plenty of good free VSTs but most of them are windows only :/

Garageband (and Logic) are AU only (possibly TDM, not sure about that one :? ).

I'd recommend getting some kind of USB/Firewire/DI box that you can record a track on and use the Garageband amp sims now and later you can get PODFarm (look for the version that uses your PODXT as a host, its cheaper than the standalone version, Line6 are always running promotions for it) and Reamp your tracks with your favourite presets, then in the future if you still have the option to re-amp through a real amp/Axe-FX/etc
I see a rainbow rising
Look there on the horizon
And I'm coming home

if i plug my guitar directly into my mac the garageband amp sims sounds like dirge.
it becomes a chore to record anything that way.
i used to use reaper but i like the simplicity of garageband. i don't care about stuff sounding awesome, i just wanted to sound good enough so i dont get really annoyed trying to record.
i gave up using a UX1 with this too. using the Pod is the better way to do it but the pod is just huge.

in theory the ux1 will be the same as the pod youll just have to do everything via gearbox/pod farm

the pod does all its modelling in the pod. The UX1 used pod farm.
I find the pod sounds a lot better. Pod Farm is better than the garageband amps but i still spend a long time messing with things to get something that sounds reasonable and not just fizzy low mids and nothing else

ahh i do get what you mean i noticed the difference between the xt live that i used to have and my toneport

i guess it all depends on the computer you're using it with.

If you still have the ux1 it will work pretty well as  DI for any of the amp sims that you can find and will save you a bit of cash as you want have to buy one

i think you've talked me into sticking with my Pod a bit.
might just take the pod into work tonight and jam on that with some headphones.

now all i need to sort out is my Kramer/Charvel/Gunslinger GAS.

My band mate has an old charvel that had been through a fire and everything so was repainted cheaply as it wasnt too damaged
the paint is coming off in places but it looks awesome in an odd way

those are the best pics i can find but it is an absolutely awesome guitar even though it does have an 85 in it :P

I'd say go for a FireWire powered audio interface. The Market is flooded with them so you should get one fairly cheaply. Then use the audio outs on the pod into the interface. That won't tax your MacBook's CPU as much as your pod will be doing all the tone work. If you use the L&R 1/4 jacks, then you can record in stereo too.
They're was a forum member on here who recorded an album a while back that was on sale in iTunes, using a pod and a zoom hardisk recorder. He had this great tone that came from using a valve mic preamp between the pod and the inputs on the recorder. It wasn't an expensive bit of gear but made a huge difference to his tone. His forum name was Steve and he had a big 360 digger for an avatar. His clips should be on the players section still. He had some good stuff.  :D
