Jaguar or Jazzmaster?
« on: June 05, 2010, 04:15:48 AM »
I'm selling one of my teles to a really good kid at my church, he's sucha good guy so although i made it i dont regret selling it to him because i know he'll love it! =) So i'll have funds and will need to get another back up guitar, so the question is Jaguar or Jazzmaster?
The tele i have now is rather bright and attacking but not jangly by any means. So I know jaguars are brighter then jazzmaster but cant jaguars get warm too? I'm not well versed in jaguars just know they look sweet and sound like a jangly tele from what i understand. Jazzmasters are obviously warmer and fuller so that would be a major difference.
Further more i know there are billions of different variations of both and current production models, what are some of the best and why would you say that? Really this is just me trying to wade through the piles of choices =) Thank y'all for the help! Cheers and God bless - Nicholas A. Paige
=) Cheers and God bless =)

If music was a beast, i'd have the sweetest saddle =)

The jaguar has a much shorter scale length, which I didn't much care for.

I'm in agreement with gwEm. I would go for a Jazzmaster.
I think I hate being indecisive.

My vote goes for the Jaguar.

I'd be looking at the Classic Player Special with the flatter radius, TOM bridge and hot rodded pickups.

The Jaguar has a 24" scale, which isn't to everyone's tastes but I barely noticed a huge difference when I had my mustang. The lower scale length also makes the strings flappier, so a higher gauge of string is usually used (i.e. 11s on a shortscale feel like 10s on a Gibson for example). Can also darken the sound a little, especially if you use the rhythm switch.

I like jaguars, but if it was my choice I'd go for a jazzmaster. Go try them out!

if you're going for either i would encourage you to take a look at these. myself and one of the guys here have jap teles bought from this shop and these are special editions of the jag and jazz. not my cup of tea, but they're amazing players and the shop still has one of each

Personally I find jaguars better looking (hence why I'm having feline build me a custom) but the scale thing might bother you They can get warm enough for you I think especially in the neck gets extremely dark in some settings.

Jazzmasters got the more familar 25.5", whatever you go for I'd either get the bridge modded to a TOM or swap it straight out for a mustang one. Also a thing called a buzz stop (if I remember right) is quite useful - cuts the angle over the bridge to the trem so helps cut down buzz and supposedly improves sustain.

Try looking at the offsetguitars.com forums probably more detailed descriptions as its focus solely on those styles.

Really my answer to these type of questions is always - go and try a couple out to see what you prefer.

There is a humbucker version too (with stoptail)  if you're specifically looking for a darker sound.

it would have to be this for me

I was reading an old guitar mag (on the bog ) that had this featured.  One of my favorites too (although it was more red than purple in the mag)
