Pick Up Suggestions
« on: June 05, 2010, 05:32:40 AM »
Hey guys,
I need some help for my LP. I recently purchased a Marshall DSL100 and my LP sounds very muddy through it so I am trying to find some new pickups for it. Before you get the wrong idea, I have multiple guitars that I have played through the Marshall, but this is the only one with a problem. It's a mahogany body as you probably guessed and I usually use 10-52 strings if the makes a difference. I mainly play metal, but a good clean for the neck pickup would be nice. Clarity is my main concern, but hugh output is always appreciated. PDT_003 Thanks in advance.

Since you stated mahogany only and no mention of any maple, your string gauge, very muddy, metal music, good clean for neck, and clarity as main concern. . .

IMO = The undisputed. . .  calibrated Cold Sweat set.  :)

I prefer the cold sweat with darker or more nasal amps
I have a modded vintage JMP (the mod is based on the Shark and Strato channels of the Bogner Fish, but it has almost as much gain as a DSL) and the sweat sounds way too bright on that amp, unless I downtune to something below D
the nailbomb sounded much better with that amp
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Hi,

I also thought of the Cold Sweat immediately :) Definitely a ceramic magnet for the bridge.  But you could specify this a bit further. The other alternative I thought of was the Painkiller. The choise ultimately depends on what the guitar is like acoustically and what are the tones you have in mind (some example?). Painkiller is tighter and has a lot of mids. Lots os upper mids, and is definitely not lacking in clarity. The CS is a bit more old school, has an aggressive high end cut and lots of clarity. Pretty neutral in the midrange, no real peaks there. It's the more versatile of the two.

i used to use a miracle man in my agile les paul with my marshall tsl and it sounded absolutely awesome

i also used a nailbomb briefly but found it didnt have the power that i needed or the low end definition

Looking back,  I left out a few details last night. Long day yesterday. The guitar does have a flame maple top. I also tune down a whole step and sometimes drop C. As far as tone goes, I go for an Exodus type tone. My amp is usually set like this: T: 7 M: 6 B:7 G: 8. If the high amount of bass is alarming you, you have never heard the DSL. Plus, my other guitars sound fine with the bass up that high. The other pickups I have are a DiMarzio Tone Zone and a PAF in an alder Warmoth V-2 body. The Tone Zone has a low treble reading, but it's an alder body and it has plenty of midrange grind. DiMarzio suggested either a D Activator or a Super Distortion to remedy my Les Paul problem. I hope all this helps.

that bass setting really does shock me because the tsl i find to be overly bassy at times and only have it at around 3

the reason why its shocking to me is that the DSL is meant to be a fair bit darker and bassier than the TSL

then again mines a combo and i believe the speaker could be the biggest culprit

Exodus

ok, COLD SWEAT!  :D :D :D

but as a BLS fan, you shouldn't rule out the miracle man
it's a bit hotter, less bright, punchier and more modern than the cold sweat
the pinch harmonics sound a lot fatter
but for Exodus and specially Pantera, I like the cold sweat better

I had a DSL on top of 4 Greenbacks, and when I changed out the stock chinese preamp tubes for an RFT in V1 and standard JJ's in the other 3 slots, I was able to lower my bass setting from 6 down to 3 and had a 3D thing going on with lovely pinch harmonics too.  Just thought to mention.

Now that you've added the maple top info I'll include a vote for the MM too, but CS set is still my 1st opinion.  Good luck with all.  :)
