Which BKP in RG HRG1?
« on: June 08, 2010, 08:10:46 PM »
Hi folks,

i'm looking for inspiration about which pickup and which cover will fit my beloved Ibanez the most.

My guitar is an Giger model, RGHRG1 to be exact. It's got an basswood body and rosewood fingerboard. But my auditory isn't really the best, so i cant say for sure that the guitar itself matches the properties rumored by basswood. It's tuned to drop C right now, and i don't plan to go any lower.

My musical preferences are mostly described by progressive, experimental metal. I pretty much like the tone of bands like:
- Periphery (superb rhytm)
- Chimpspanner(beautiful solo sound)
- In Flames (imo THE definition of a nice punchy sound)
Nevertheless, i want my own sound - that's just to give a direction.

I lookin forward to your comments, any optionions are highly appreciated!
Let me know if i can add more detail if needed!

Hope i didnt messed some senteces up, my english kinda sucks :x

Greetz,
Mathias

That is definitely one cool-looking guitar! Now if it only wasn't an Ibanez...

Pickup - I think you should check the sticky Nailbomb demo in the Players section - that is done on an RG that should be similar to yours!

I found the miracle man to work excellently why i had a basswood superstrat.

The NB didnt do it for me i felt it was being held back by the guitar.

Then again i haven't gotten along with Nailbombs in any guitar ive owned i always feel like they could just have that little extra something that every clip everyone else posts has but my sound with them never does.

Thanks for the input!

I'm not that sure about that RG can be compared to mine. I guess the wood on prestige models will top the quality of the RGHRG. But thanks for the tip!

And what cover would you choose? There are so much beautiful covers available ... i just can't decide :-)

for that i would go with matt black with no pole pieces maybe battle worn

I think the ceramic nailbomb or miracle man could work very well for you.

Have you emailed Tim he should be your first point of contact.

He knows his pickups inside out.

Does anyone think the Painkiller would sound any good in an RG? Sounds like the tone OP is looking for. Periphery (:D), good solo sound and punch. Being a Periphery fan, I want a Painkiller for my 7 string, as recommended by you guys. But it's mahogany. So... Not that I've ever had a Nailbomb, but something about tuning to C with it doesn't really float my boat. Nolly made it absolutely growl in his 7321 though.

Battleworn might be a bit of a gamble in this axe. Definitely some kind of black with no screws, though.

Thanks for the namedrop xXperceptionXx! I think the Painkiller would be a great choice for the bridge position - it's aggressive, superbly clear and tight, and has the upper-midrange punch that gets you straight into the djent ballpark with little effort.
The Nailbomb is cool too, more dynamic and open, but not as tight as the PK, and is less naturally djenty. Certainly more versatile though.
In my experience, basswood guitars are often quite tonally neutral - they take pretty much all pickups happily.

Someone on here had a set of camo Warpigs in their Ibanez Giger, and it looked ace. I would definitely be thinking along the lines of the camo covers for this one too.

It's cool. I dig how tight you can get low tuned guitars with pickups that aren't really known for tightness.

Never thought about camos though. Would look sick!

I had a miracle man in an Ibanez RG 470F/TBL which is basswood, and certainly not top of the range. The MM bridge in that axe SLAYS. That said, the PK is probably voiced closer to what you mention, and should work superbly, too.

We expect to hear clips when you have installed the pickups (and see pictures afterwards, of course!). :)

I'd definitely go with the miracle man for this one
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks for your post, especially for the ones at the EQ-Charts thread! Even if i feel like i have to decide about more PUs now :-)
MM, WP and PK are my favourites so far. Maybe i'll just roll a dice...

I'll do my best to add pictures and soundfiles.
