Vintage Hofner Verithin
« on: June 19, 2010, 09:21:33 PM »
Anyone got any experiance of these?  I've got chance to buy a completely original (pots and everything) 1963 Verithin just like this one:

Prices would be good as I think that this could be a steal at only £600 (although it would probably mean trading in the Eggle and maybe my acoustic too).

Cheers dudes.

I've never owned one, but I've played lots.  The necks are nice, but the pickups are pretty weak.  Overall they are not a bad guitar.  I used to sell them for £50-75 in the early 70's!
So many pickups, so little time

£600 is a good price if its in good condition, there are quite a few abused ones out there,   Check for seperation around the body edges, they are a bit more delicate than a 335

Cheers guys.  It looked in good nick, the body edges looked sound and the neck joint was solid.  The inlays made my eyes go funny though

The body had some checkling but certainly not too bad for the year.  Pots were a little stiff as you'd expect.

Only had a 75% look over it as I didn't want to get too in to the idea of having it.  Had to come home and get the Eggle out to see which I wanted most.  Still not made up my mind fully but think I might keep the Eggle.

Wez - Can you drop me a PM with how much to finish it off as I don't have time for much at the minute.  Just needs a nut and fret dress.  I'll set it up and wire it myself.  Neck plate is in an envelope on my mantle piece BTW.  One day I'll remeber to take it out with me (I only usually remember when I drive past a post box)

Well Gents,

I've decided to keep the Eggle.

If anyone wants a look at the Verithin (or the orginal Distortocaster.... or the original Super Yob) then I'd head on over to Warwick.  I'm not too far up the road (about 25 minutes North), so you could pop in and buy me a pint for commission

I think you made the right decision. I'd happily own an Eggle whilst all but one of the old Hofners I've tried (quite a few) were bloody awful. Also because of Patrick Eggle's continuing history in the guitar world yours will probably be worth good money in the future.
