I'd agree with the guys above.
The rackmount XT Pro seems a bit overkill (unless you're in a rackmounting situation already for a home studio).
Out of the original XT range, the Pro and the XT Live (floor board) had USB and a Variax connection. I went for the XT Live because I was using Variax guitars at the time, it gave me connectivity to the pc, and it gave me the footswitching while I was playing without buying a board.
Tones are fine, love them for a couple of years. But I far,
far prefer my Vox Tonelab LE, which I got a couple of years later, for amp modelling. I prefer some of the XT's effects and it's wahs, but otherwise my Vox Tonelab is my go-to "amp set-up" at home (this includes the actual valve amps I own) - it just gives the best valve tones at living room volume. I use it for recording and general playing (either headphones or through the monitor speakers).
If you went Tonelab, you'd need line-ins on the PC/soundcard for recording. The Line 6 stuff is all set for direct in.
to sort of jump on this idea...if I just wanna jam along & learn songs, what about the Tascam GT1?
If you think of going this route, think about the Boss Micro BR as well. It is a comparable price, and has amp models, effects, drums, mastering, an mp3/trainer mode, and is a multi-tracker. I get better recordings out of this thing than I do my PC set-up! (And it fits in your shirt pocket...)
