line 6 xt pro
« on: July 03, 2010, 09:15:29 AM »
Hi,

Im currently curious about Line 6 POD XT Pro. (Seen them for about £235 new) and cheaper on the bay.  Are they any good?  I have little to no experience of any line 6 products so any opinions greatly recived.

What I am after is  mainly after is somthing for puting idea's down onto the pc. Im looking at say under three hundred.  I guess it could be more but im really not sure just how much home recording (putting ideas down I will end up doing).

I have also  toyed with a Vox Jamvox  in the past and these seem to be at about £100 at the moment so that is another option im toying with.

Have you guys got any ideas?

Thanks in advance

I have a line6 toneport GX which is the exact same technology as the xt pro it just does exactly what you need as it only works for recording purposes.

I also have the vox tonelab but i havent really used the modelling too much on it but from the little time that i have i do prefer it over the line6.

However the line6 is absolutely great for tracking ideas and to be honest you can get some quite decent sounds from it.

Also if you just want it for recording and Jamming along/learning stuff on your pc then the GX would be ideal for you as theyre about £37 and do everything you stated in your post.

The XT Pro is more a rack mount modelling pre amp which can also do all the recording and everything in exactly the same way but i think unless your actually wanting to use it as a pre amp in a rack set up the PRO will be overkill for your needs.

If it's just for recording various ideas at home, I wouldn't bother. Seems a lot of money for something you won't be using live on with a band.

Something like a Line 6 Toneport UX-1 or UX-2 would do the trick.

Oh yeah, I use the GX too. Very cheap but you get a lot for your money. I've done some very good sounding recordings with it, very useful tool.

to sort of jump on this idea...if I just wanna jam along & learn songs, what about the Tascam GT1?

I've got an X3-Live and it certainly is good at what it does, I thnk it's better at higher gain than low gain.

However I purchased a Guitar Rig Mobile for use with my laptop and I've been so blown away with the Sounds in Guitar Rig that I've Upgraded to the full version of the software. The new Plexi and Jump models based on their new technology really do sound bloody excellent.

For learning stuff, I find Guitar Rig easier to use than the POD Software. It has a dual tape deck appraoch with speed, fine tune (in cents) and pitch (In semi tomes) on the input and a basic style tape deck at the output. It's very useful for capturing that Riff. The plugin seems very stable in Reaper.

I guess it all depends on how powerful your PC is. The XT/X3 route put little strain on your CPU whereas Guiter Rig Fair hammers them.

£37?  Where can you get them for £37. They are £62 where I've looked online (Which still looks good value...)

I'd agree with the guys above.

The rackmount XT Pro seems a bit overkill (unless you're in a rackmounting situation already for a home studio).

Out of the original XT range, the Pro and the XT Live (floor board) had USB and a Variax connection. I went for the XT Live because I was using Variax guitars at the time, it gave me connectivity to the pc, and it gave me the footswitching while I was playing without buying a board.

Tones are fine, love them for a couple of years. But I far, far prefer my Vox Tonelab LE, which I got a couple of years later, for amp modelling. I prefer some of the XT's effects and it's wahs, but otherwise my Vox Tonelab is my go-to "amp set-up" at home (this includes the actual valve amps I own) - it just gives the best valve tones at living room volume. I use it for recording and general playing (either headphones or through the monitor speakers).

If you went Tonelab, you'd need line-ins on the PC/soundcard for recording. The Line 6 stuff is all set for direct in.

to sort of jump on this idea...if I just wanna jam along & learn songs, what about the Tascam GT1?

If you think of going this route, think about the Boss Micro BR as well. It is a comparable price, and has amp models, effects, drums, mastering, an mp3/trainer mode, and is a multi-tracker. I get better recordings out of this thing than I do my PC set-up! (And it fits in your shirt pocket...)

I believe i got it from rocking rooster or something like that.

it may have been a sale item as i got it just before they changed the name to pod studio and made the front panel black.

For a bit of a preview of what a Pod XT can do, here's a little ditty I came up with a while back on my Pod XT Live (the foot-pedal one). Apparently the Pod XT Pro sounds have a better sample rate, but that's just what I heard from a couple of people, I've not looked into the tech spec.

The sample below was done with a setting I made myself, but the Pod can sound even more awesome than this, I'm just a bit of a patch n00b, hah!

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=818831&songID=7881278

Also, if you do decide to buy one, you can download patches that other people have made, which is pretty cool Some of them are great, but some of them are a bit ropey. I would definitely say buying the amp model add-ons is worth it. The sample above is from the Metal collection, so in order to use my patch, you will need to download that and update your Pod via USB. In my opinion, the add-on amp sets are by far better than the ones that come with the Pod out of the box.

I'm saving up for an Axe FX though. Much as I love my Pod, the Axe FX is just on a completely different plane of existence! But for the money, I don't think you can do much better than the Pod series.

Oh, and here's a link to my tone if anyone is interested:
http://line6.com/customtone/tone/198075/

[EDIT] Just to say also, if you want to take your tone live at some point, they're awesome for that too. I put mine through a Valvestate VS100 and it sounds even better than on the track above! So much power, so much crunch, so many mids! Literally, with this and a power amp, you can do whatever the hell you want and still sound as good as someone with a true valve amp.

Thanks for the replies.  Nadzilla I like the track you posted nice tone too.   Im going to do some more research on the web.  There been some good altertatives I have not looked into that have been mentioned to (the vox tonelab le and the guitar rig).   That said at the moment I am drawn to the rack option all be it the cheaper version.  Im sure you guys are right toneport or somthing similar would do the trick.

I'm going to have good think, all the information has been aprreciated.

Thanks you
