SlowHand Users
« on: July 12, 2010, 05:19:41 AM »
I'm getting ready to order a set of SlowHands.
Wondering if you all out there have any opinions
on whether I should get the bridge with or without
a baseplate ??

Thanks in advance !!

Hi, I can't say either way I regret to say. I don't have the base plate and have never used a guitar with one fitted and can't compare.
Send three and fourpence we're going to a dance

Hello & welcome to the forum :)

Can't help with your specific question as I only have the neck Slowhand - with baseplate AND without.

The baseplated one has more power & low end.  For me, the baseplate was well worth getting as the SH barely balances volume-wise with the Holy Diver bridge humbucker (which is what it's paired with).  It still sounds like a Slowhand, only with noticeably more "punch".
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

after reading every review I can find on the slowhands in the BKP forum...
all I've seen is rave reviews on the slowhands with the baseplate

Now I'm thinking of getting the baseplate on all three pickups for the set

Thought I'd posted in here already

Anyway - welcome :D

I've not tried Slowhands myself, it's not quite the tone I go for first on strats. Neither have I tried baseplates on strat pickups, never really felt the need myself...

BUT, listening to clips, I've reached the same conclusion as you - if I did go for Slowhands, I'd probably go for baseplates all round. It seems to me that baseplates make strat pickups more "Slowhand-like", so if I was after the Slowhand vibe I'd be thinking, yeah, max it out! Whack them baseplates on :D

I have a set with just a bridge baseplate. i commend this setup - works well.

tim suggested there might be a bit too much bass with a neck baseplate, and even the middle.

i'll never forget those words ;)

Tim said those same words to me as well !!
Just every review with the baseplate has been nothing less than rave reviews.

Do you feel the baseplate on the neck & middle would be too much ??

btw, are you glad you got the baseplate on the bridge ??
for playing 'clean', does position 4 (bridge + middle) have too much bass ??
or do you think a little less bass would suit it well ??
this is the only reason NOT to get the baseplate

in a SSS strat yes - those positions have enough poke.

maybe i would think about it with an H-S arrangement and a warpig bridge or something.

Ah! I've never spoken to Tim, so I've not heard these words of wisdom... interesting.

The general rule of thumb round here is "Tim's usually right"

EDIT: And I tend to put a fair bit of store by what gwem sez as well!

Tim also told me that he's sold many with the baseplates and that the
customers have been very happy with too !!!
Not a single regret from anyone who has the baseplate.

THough he still recommends without the baseplate.

Count me among those people.

IMHO the neck Slowhand doesn't have too much bass at all.  However, I'm mostly a humbucker guy - don't even own a "real" SSS strat.  My favourite neck pickup of all is the VHII neck which has a lot of bass (though not as much as the Miracle Man) so I guess any neck single isn't going to sound particularly pokey to my frazzled ears...

But FWIW, the plated Slowhand neck seems to have less bass than the unplated Trilogy & only marginally more than the unplated Irish Tour or Sultan...

Have you heard the Mule neck ??  I really like the Mule in the neck position,
way too thin in the bridge though.   But, I really dig the soundclips of the VHII in the neck.
I do have the VHII in the bridge.

I didn't know the IT was updated ??  when was that ??
for the soundclips I've heard suggest I would think the IT would be too thin

Dixied,
