Ah! Thanks Roo, that explains my earlier confusion over strings.
Guitar staying tune pretty good (when in no-string mode).
Seriously though, Alex (or anyone else), do you know something about short Maestro Vibrolos that I don't yet?
I'm getting quite good now at getting vintage strat trems to stay reasonably in tune even with quite vigorous wangery...
And I'm now thinking my Explorer wants a short Maestro - watch footage of Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1975 or so, Allen Collins's Explorer seems to hold its tuning OK under what I'd term "vigorous wangery".
On the Gibson forums, some nice chap was telling me that the Maestro is very good at "faster vibrato" than you can achieve with your left hand - that seems to be what Allen Collins used it for (and it's one of the things I use a strat trem for now).
And, oh yeah, amongst all the excitement, I forgot to answer this last night:
want to go timeshares in a 60s V then Andy? ;)
prolly not, old chap
EDIT: Ah, Tellboy to the rescue on the vibrola subject while I was writing - many thanks :D
