Metal Bridge Pup for Basswood
« on: July 17, 2010, 10:24:17 PM »
I'm thinking Painkiller, but want to get some other opinions.  It's going to be used for high-gain heavy metal, close to the thrash and death metal side of the spectrum.  I've heard/read that Warpig doesn't perform too well in a basswood guitar.

Miracle Man. I have one in a basswood ibanez, and it absolutely slays for the styles you mentioned. :)

The pig works great in basswood. Dont know where you heard that, but its not true in my experience.

The miracle many could be good, but whats your guitar, amp, and tonal proclivities? Much thrash and death has a smoother sound with at least a bit of scoop to it that the MM does really well, while a lot have a grinding middy sound with a stronger attack that the painkiller does really well. There are other pickups that are also great for both styles, depending on your tastes; what do you want sound wise?

The warpig's Absolutely slays in basswood. Since basswood is so "neutral" in its sound, it makes the warpig ideal for it since its such a "extremely voiced" pickup.

I got both a Cpig and a Apig in Basswood guitars. And they are perfect for my needs.

How low do you tune? And which amp do you use?

Painkiller ;)
Savage painkiller helps the soft attack of basswood.
C-pig, C-Diver, Holydiver, Miracle man, Sinner, Trilogy, Slowhand.

C# standard, through an HM-2 boosted Ampeg VH140C.  Going for the Dismember/Entombed sound for a death/grind band, something along the lines of Rotten Sound.  I may be going down to a mahogany 7-string though, and then gettting C-Pigs, but we're undecided.

OH PLEASE! can i buy your head.. I will even give you head for that head :D

Well i play exactly the same thing.

Well do you use the hm2 totally dimed in the Entombed vein? Or are you just "morphing" the sound with it?
The hm-2 has so much sludge in it that i would totally reconsider my choice. you should go for the painkiller with the hm-2 combo.

I play exactly the same style. Im a huge terrorizer/Insect warfare sucker.

Well:

Morph(boost) - A/C pig - if you tune C# only, then the alnico pig will serve you best. Since its a bit looser, and gives you a lot of grindcore sludge. C pig if you consider to tune a bit lower, or are more interested in a more death metallish approach.

Hm2 Dime(dist) - Painkiller

Our grind band is complete Terrorizer worship.  I've been through most of the common metal amplifiers, dual/triple rectos, 5150s, Marshalls, Valvestates, etc, and the VH140C kicks most of them in the teeth for our style.  The Dual Recto stands alone though, but the VH140C is just as good, and cost me 650 USD less than the Mesa.  I use the HM-2 as a boost and not in the dimed method of those bands.  I couldn't ever get that same tone at stage/practice volume, so the HM-2 as a boost shapes the sound, and we do get something close but not entirely the same.

I don't really want an overly sludgy tone, because we do have some riffs that need some clarity, but want the distortion to be very raw.  I do use the guitar for some other metal styles without an HM-2, so I should choose the pickups that would best suit the amplifier and guitar instead of the pedal.  I rarely play anything outside of heavy metal and crust/punk.

Believe me. The painkiller will be perfect. My other guitarist uses a Painkiller in a Bc rich gunslinger, and it just growls. Its like having a Jcm800 inside the guitar. Very very Jesse Pintado'ish

Excellent and thanks for the suggestions.  We have been talking about getting into baritone/7-string territory, but if we stay with C# standard, there's going to be a Painkiller/Cold Sweat combo for me in the near future.  I'll talk with the band this weekend and find out what's going to happen.

If we do go down to B standard/7-strings, would the Painkiller still be an optimal pickup for a basswood 7?  If I get mahogany or alder, I would probably get C-Pig, but the guitar I'm currently looking at is also basswood.

as far as i know the painkiller was originally voiced for alder guitars so it would be the best for that scenario

I have played with my miracle man in C
and it sounds the business.

tim himself recommends warpigs in basswood.
