NGD - 7-string!
« on: July 19, 2010, 10:45:46 AM »
As I posted elsewhere, I went to the BKP meet yesterday, but on the way I made a lengthy detour to buy a guitar from Kieran, aka JackBauer:

Ibanez RG1527

I took along a friend's 7-string that I've been considering buying, but as soon as Kieran handed me the RG1527, I knew I was going to be walking out of the house with it. Absolutely great condition, and with BKPs fitted.  Even better, they were my favourite BKPs & the ones I would have chosen: Holy Divers

The guitar was newly restrung with a superb setup.  When I read the wiring mods that Kieran had done (swapped the 5-way out for a 3-way with push-pull pots for neck series/parallel & bridge series/split) I thought I'd probably want to change back, but having played it a little, they make total sense (& a really tidy wiring job too).

I was going to suggest that the "pics or it didn't happen" rule didn't apply here as several forumites have seen me with the guitar in hand about 4 hours after I bought it, but then Feline helpfully posted this pic:

All in all, a great deal on a great guitar.  Happy Antag! :D
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Cheers Guys for the comments! PDT_003

I'm Glad you love the guitar George, and I hope it serves you well.

I really loved the neck on your warmoth strat though, it was exactly what I like in a neck.

Hopefully I'll get down to a meet sometime.

P.S I have more guitars for sale (sorry for the shameless Plug!!!!) PDT_002

Congratulations! :D

I completely missed the fact that you had a NGD at the meet - I'm not even sure I saw this one in the flesh  (I think I must have been resting from "Koch-fatigue" outside at the time )

Like 38th, I've no experience of a 7-string. I did eye up HairyChris's for a possible try-out on sunday, but never got round to it...

So the HD 7s work well in basswood? I have a 7621 that needs a change at some point but was always considering the CS.

Nice looking guitar, though, seems to have been babied!

Congrats! Welcome to the world of seven strings.

That wiring mod sounds really cool. My friend did something similar with RG7620 and RG7621 except both switches were series/parallel.

I'm curious how the Holy Divers hold up in a basswood seven.

Well, I used to own one of the early Ibanez Universe 7s, but sold it because my expectations were unrealistic.  Paradoxically, I found it actually limited my playing as it was too tempting to just grind away one-dimensionally on the low B.  But 18 years later I must be a better (or at least, more imaginative) player, because I'm really enjoying the 7 & feel like I'm actually using the full range of it.

So the HD 7s work well in basswood?

Yes, very well.

I know I've posted stuff in the past that the HD wouldn't be my first choice for detuning (I keep all my 6 strings in Eb), but I'd like to retract those comments :)  The HD7 holds up very well down in Bb

OK, it doesn't have that "instant" ceramic response that you get from, say, the Painkiller.  But saying that it's not tight isn't the same thing as saying it's loose, or muddy - far from it, it's really clear.  I'm not into the ultra-technical prog-death metal thing - my influences are more Obituary, Godflesh, Crowbar (i.e. sludge :)) - but I don't think you couldn't play that style on it.  It's more of a zzzhhhhin than a djent if you know what I mean...

The low end has a real "thump" to it.  I've often talked about the HD's midrange "chunk" before, it's probably why the HD is my favourite pickup, but that fat midrange "growl" is even better on the 7   Let's just say that I hit a low Bb & find myself thinking "hmmm, I'll just let that ring out for a bit longer" - it sounds huge

As far as I can remember, this is my first basswood guitar, but the HD in it seems not far from how it sounds in alder.  Very happy.

Hmm, if that sort of music is your area then you might want to try my B7 amped at a proper volume. The A-Pigs make things interesting... difficult to pinch harmonics but generally good at pummelling into submission! And I've still got that 7621 to put BKPs in. Maybe when my cashflow has sorted itself out...

Yeah, nice one! I like that guitar and the Holy Diver is a great pickup! I use mine in B - exactly where you wouldn't use it  :D but then again my guitar has a 27" scale.

Hope you'll have a lot of fun with that guitar!

Yeah  - I briefly had an A-Pig in a Gibson V, tuned to drop-Bb with 13-62 strings on it.  It certainly sounded heavy

But thinking back, I reckon the HD might be just that little bit tighter on palm mutes at low tunings.  OK, it's not a like-for-like comparison, but have a listen to this HD clip in drop-C#.  I don't have the Gothic (or a 'pig in anything else) anymore to compare next to the HD7, but perhaps that's why I never went out & got another 'pig - I loved the saturation & power, but the HD is just right for me...

^ That V sounded awesome. Absolutely crushing, just wish the shape sat well with me.

Any clips of the 7 yet?
