80's guitar tone
« on: July 25, 2010, 03:04:20 PM »
Planning a pedalboard for predominantly 80s sort of tone, from hair metal to mid era maiden - Powerslave, Somewhere in Time for example. I'll obviously need a delay pedal, but which one for that authentic tone?

Advice regarding chorus pedal as well would be good. I'll be playing a swamp ash RG loaded with Dimarzio super-distortion in the bridge and PAF Pro in the neck through my blackstar HT5. Will I need a reverb unit as well? and which one?

Thanks in advance :D

You should look into the Eventide TimeFactor and ModFactor.

Thanks for the responses, I did consider the Eventide stuff, bit over my price range, I also waited patiently for the demo at the guitar show last year at the NEC while the demo dude desparately tried to get both the eventide factors to work!.

The MXR pedals look good, just need the spandex and hairspray 8).....maybe a bit of reverb?

MXR Carbon Copy Delay

Or an EHX memory toy - sounds as good, has that true analog vintage vibe, and less expensive.
Have: Crawlers, BGF 50/52s, Mules, ABomb, RiffRaff
Had : Slowhands (n&m), Trilogy (b)

Yup I'm in total agreement there. It's a bit dirtier than the MXR but in my opinion it's within a few quid of quality and given it's half the price that works well for a skinflint like me  :D

The Hardwire Delay pedal is absolutely fantastic. In fact, all the Hardwire pedals are very good, as can be seen from the fact that I use Hardwire Delay, Chorus and Metal Distortion. They're built like tanks, the sound is superb and they are 100% reliable. I managed to get all mine from Ebay too for decent prices, though they're new enough that I had to be patient. I believe the Hardwire Reverb is also excellent.
